Planning for various types of disasters through an \u201call hazards\u201d approach to emergency preparedness is essential to enhance Texas\u2019 ability to respond to, recover from, and mitigate against the unexpected. An \u201call hazards\u201d preparedness gives the more than five million Texans with disabilities a broad range of knowledge and resources that can be effective during any kind of disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important?<\/p>\n<p>The Kaiser Family Foundation took a poll of people from New Orleans who evacuated to the Astrodome, asking: \u201cWhich of these was the biggest reason you did not leave (New Orleans earlier)?\u201d 22% of the respondents said, \u201cI was physically unable to leave.\u201d In addition, 23% said, \u201cI had to care for someone who was unable to leave.\u201d Together this makes 45% of the people who did not leave New Orleans early did so due to disability-related reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Many Texans with disabilities, given equal access to information and education about preparing for disasters, can make individual plans and react to disasters as do other Texans.<\/p>\n<p>Preparedness Videos Related to Hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>Texans Prepare for Hurricane Season: Surviving Hurricanes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org\/survivingdisaster.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org\/survivingdisaster.htm<\/a><br \/>\nAmerican Sign Language Version: Texans Prepare: Surviving Hurricanes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org\/media\/VLOG-Surviving_Hurricanes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org\/media\/VLOG-Surviving_Hurricanes.htm<\/a><br \/>\nPress Release: May 29, 2014: &#8220;Texas has a great track record when it comes to being prepared for natural disasters, and that readiness starts with our citizens,&#8221; Gov. Perry said. &#8220;I urge every Texan to get ready for hurricane season by taking a few <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"2e86c153-1a47-4b59-ada2-1af0a8baf050\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"225a31b8-b89a-4af3-8b02-724957d08ecd\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"5fda155c-91fc-44f4-87a8-a36ab9b817d0\">common-sense<\/span><\/span><\/span> measures to prepare their families for whatever Mother Nature might throw their way this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To help Texans be safe in the event of a major storm, the governor is strongly encouraging families to develop an emergency plan that designates a place to go in case of evacuations, and compile a readiness kit of <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"d0c4fae3-de64-4449-9bfc-cbc778cc5620\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"51256e11-d094-4340-a69b-d9de050be3d8\">important supplies<\/span><\/span>, including medication, non-perishable food items and water.
