Board members serve a maximum three-year term.<\/p>\n<p>A qualified applicant must:<\/p>\n<p>* be a Texas resident;<br \/>\n* hold a valid BEI Level III, III-Intermediary, IV, IV-Intermediary, V, V-Intermediary, Advanced, or Master certification and preferably have at least five years of interpreting experience OR be a frequent consumer of interpreter services who demonstrates knowledge of the field of interpreting and linguistics;<br \/>\n* possess an Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), Associate of Applied Science (AAS), or higher degree and\/or have five years of experience in management, experience serving on a board, or other experience applicable to the work of the BEI;<br \/>\n* have knowledge of state law, rules, and policies related to the BEI;<br \/>\n* possess the ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts;<br \/>\n* have knowledge of linguistics, sign language theory, and interpreting for test development initiatives; and<br \/>\n* understand the impact of rules on the interpreting profession and of the communication access needs of the users of interpreter services.<\/p>\n<p>Appointed board members advise DARS DHHS <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"b1ba397e-34cb-4821-8aeb-64bfeaf4865e\">concerning<\/span> the BEI certification program and may assist with test development initiatives. They are expected to attend regularly scheduled board meetings, to review and make recommendations regarding interpreter complaints, and to participate in panel discussions during conferences. Meetings are held quarterly or on an as-needed basis. DARS DHHS reimburses travel expenses for training and board meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Each interested candidate must submit a resume and a five-minute video in American Sign Language (ASL) <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"020800b3-d200-4a0d-b341-7705fdd719c1\">describing<\/span> the skills and knowledge that he or she will bring to the position, specifically as it relates to test development and\/or maintenance experience, managerial experience, interpreting experience, and knowledge of state and federal laws impacting the profession of interpreting and the deaf community.
