Lamar<br \/>\nAustin, Texas<br \/>\nRoom: 1410<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">This seminar will provide an overview of the legal system for practicing and potential court interpreters, including discussions of the roles of court interpreters, positioning of court interpreters, courtroom personnel, pre?requisite knowledge and skills for a legal interpreter, working in teams of interpreters who are deaf or hard of hearing, court code of conduct, and roles and protocol for court interpreters. Through presentation of material and large and small group discussion of ethical scenarios, participants gain an understanding of the constraints and limitations placed on court interpreters. Participants gain an appreciation of the major legal theories governing the various roles of the court or legal interpreter. Both in\u2014court and out\u2014of\u2014court settings such as arraignments, trials, law enforcement work, and law office work are covered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Target audience is up to 25 Texas interpreters with at least 3 years of interpreting experience. Proof of Texas BEI or RID certification is required.<\/p>\n<p>Carla M. Mathers, Esquire, SC: <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"b63dac8a-bedb-43cf-9043-9dce42a2eb49\">has practiced<\/span> law in Maryland and the District of Columbia for 20 years. She currently serves as General Counsel for TCS Associates, a prominent sign language interpreting <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"bbffb22b-b207-48d0-b66a-a0ae03875a48\">service<\/span> in Maryland, and as the Legal Program Coordinator for the MARIE\/DOIT Center. Ms. Mathers sat on the Advisory Group for Language Access to develop standards for language access in <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"89f75060-d767-457e-8dac-ac917a24b30f\">courts<\/span> for the American Bar Association. Formerly, Ms. Mathers sat <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"a78081e9-bf06-432d-8dcf-72930bab0470\">on<\/span> the Maryland Administrative Office of the Courts&#8217; Advisory Committee on Interpreters <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"0eedad08-598e-460f-8e82-ae82098cf11a\">Sub\u2014committee<\/span> on Ethics and <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"8dfa3732-8d26-4389-a8db-364671754d02\">Sub\u2014committee<\/span> on Testing and Training. She has served as an adjunct instructor for the Gallaudet <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"f6b27b8f-7686-44e3-ac4a-771e65564d5a\">University Department<\/span> of Interpretation teaching legal interpreting. She is a former Vice President <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"4c6bdf42-1aab-4a5c-854b-302e4f81ba2b\">for<\/span> the Conference of Interpreter Trainers.
