Though recent census results show Louisiana has a high number of deaf-blind people, locals with the disability say they don&#8217;t want <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"e5f3b420-d113-4bb4-b536-6d8b825c8e9e\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"21111a17-f4f5-4c75-a978-fcb6b00d9242\">pit<\/span><\/span>, they simply want help and awareness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am very, very pleased to have this many here to show that they are very motivated to come learn more about the deaf-blind,&#8221; said deaf-blind committee member Jackie Broussard.<\/p>\n<p>Guest speakers from Lafayette, Shreveport and New Orleans shared information about local services available for the deaf-blind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;South Louisiana preponderance of individuals who are of the Acadian decent,&#8221; said director of the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf Naomi DeDual. &#8220;With the Acadians came a number of individuals with the Usher Syndrome genetic variation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Usher syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation of any one of the 10 genes resulting in a combination of hearing loss and visual impairment.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"1c234c72-b065-4db3-a397-8b8d102efe96\">DeDual<\/span> discussed available services including a federally funded program that provides the deaf-blind with special technology to help them better connect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the most popular items is being able to operate your iPhone through a <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"c35e475b-eb43-4f39-9bb3-3fff6a568242\">brail<\/span> device,&#8221; said Scott Crawford with the National Deaf-Blind Equipment Program.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"bdd3db0e-454a-4f31-a0eb-47cf6c862912\">DeDual<\/span> also spoke of recent state funds to help allocate more support service providers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SSP program provides an individual who is deaf-blind with an <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"c9f5cc0e-fd0a-4df7-a099-64307c3d5fa5\">aid<\/span> who can communicate with <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"a257e69d-637b-4f2d-8c5c-008f55a18801\">tactual<\/span> sign language,&#8221; said DeDual. &#8220;They also provide orientation mobility assistance so they can have access to public and private services in their community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First time organizer Catherine Guillory says she simply has one message for the deaf-blind community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are doing this together,&#8221;
