NAD Files Complaint Against Washington Mutual, Inc. <\/p>\n
Silver Spring, MD – The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) filed
\na complaint on December 6, 2007 with the U.S. Department of Justice
\nagainst Washington Mutual, Inc. (WaMu). The complaint alleges that
\nWaMu refused to allow a deaf individual to apply for a credit card
\nwhen calling through a video relay service (VRS) in violation of
\nTitle III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The complaint
\nalleges that a WaMu supervisor said that WaMu policy is not to accept
\ncredit card applications made through VRS calls. <\/p>\n
\u001cPeople who are deaf should have equal access to banking, financial,
\nand other services that are provided by telephone,\u001d said NAD
\nPresident Bobbie Beth Scoggins. \u001cIt is hard to believe that we are
\nstill facing this kind of kind of discrimination.\u001d <\/p>\n
The ADA established nationwide telecommunications relay services for
\nuse by people who are deaf or hard of hearing or who have a speech
\ndisability that are functionally equivalent to telephone services
\nused by people without disabilities. VRS is a telecommunications
\nrelay service. \u001cBusinesses that accept credit card applications by
\ntelephone must accept credit card applications made through a relay
\nservice,\u001d said Marc Charmatz, senior attorney with the NAD Law and
\nAdvocacy Center.\u001d <\/p>\n
The NAD requested that the U. S. Department of Justice investigate
\nthis complaint and order Washington Mutual, Inc. to cease its
\ndiscriminatory practices. <\/p>\n
