{"id":28483,"date":"2014-09-04T18:39:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T23:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=28483"},"modified":"2014-09-04T18:39:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T23:39:00","slug":"deaf-caprock-high-football-player-encourages-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2014\/09\/04\/deaf-caprock-high-football-player-encourages-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Caprock High football player encourages others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deaf Caprock High football player encourages others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"03e1881d-908f-4798-a95d-09f9518de33c\">by<\/span> Crystal Vasquez<\/p>\n<p>August 31, 2014<\/p>\n<p>AMARILLO &#8212; Benjamin Diaz <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"4921fdbc-3406-477c-bd68-b32288717371\">suits<\/span> up Friday nights with his Caprock High School football team with the same expectations- to win.<\/p>\n<p>But his experiences <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"7a7b56bc-e54d-4581-b5f2-2b4366ae6295\">on<\/span> the field are different from that of his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz is Deaf.<\/p>\n<p>He says he watches the ball snap to charge, and stops <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"55d30bb1-cb55-4b73-aeea-cb94eef86692\">play<\/span> when the other players stop.<\/p>\n<p>Although he cannot hear the game, Diaz says he can feel it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel the vibrations when they\u2019re chanting,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cI feel so happy and excited, but sometimes I feel a little sad. I never had people cheer for me ever in my life until now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diaz\u2019s mother, Virginia Diaz, attends all of her son\u2019s practices and games to make sure he gets the play calls. She involved her son in sports in third grade for athletic growth and social development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing Deaf, I wanted him to understand that just because you\u2019re Deaf doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t do sports or anything you want to do,\u201d his mother said.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz suffered a torn <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"98ddb376-3a94-46b6-a9c5-da1ce1d1b5c1\">ACL his<\/span> sophomore year and has had to prove himself to stay on the playing field. His teammates, or brothers as Diaz described, encouraged him to keep fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz has inspired people along his journey of playing football on a silent field. He writes on an Amarillo ISD blog for the Deaf and encourages other to \u201cnever give up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be okay for you to be nervous,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cBut sometimes you play bad, but practice every day. Never give up and you will become a winner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diaz wants to attend Amarillo College to study mechanics.
