Super Bowl Ad Resonates With Texas School for the Deaf Community <\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u0013 February 2, 2008 Typically conversations on the Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf\u0019s (TSD) campus the week prior to the Super Bowl
\nfocus around which football team is favored to win\u0014but not this year.<\/p>\n
TSD staff and students, along with the deaf community, are very
\nexcited about the opportunity for the hearing public to get a glimpse
\nof deaf culture and humor during PepsiCo\u0019s Super Bowl commercial. The
\nidea for the ad came from some of PepsiCo\u0019s own employees – including
\ndeaf employees – who created the ad and shared it with the company\u0019s
\nsenior management. To their delight, and ours at TSD, the ad airs
\ntomorrow during Super Bowl pre-game. <\/p>\n
The commercial was filmed entirely in American Sign Language (ASL).
\nAlthough the ad includes open-captions for hearing viewers, listeners
\nmay reach to adjust their televisions when they hear no audio. The
\nPepsiCo employees chose a popular joke in the deaf community and
\ntitled their commercial \u001cBob\u0019s House.\u001d When you see the ad, you\u0019ll
\nsee the unique way these deaf football fans find their way to their
\nfriend\u0019s house for Super Bowl viewing. <\/p>\n
\u001cThe commercial should heighten awareness about both ASL and the deaf
\ncommunity while having broad appeal to all audiences\u001d said Claire
\nBugen, TSD Superintendent. She says there has been some excited talk
\naround campus since the ad was announced. \u001cWhat a thrill for deaf
\npeople watching to see the language of their community highlighted
\nduring the most highly valued airtime on television\u001d. <\/p>\n
ASL is a complete, complex language that employs signs made with the
\nhands and other movements, including facial expressions and postures
\nof the body. It is the first language of many deaf North Americans,
\nand one of several communication options available to deaf people.
\nASL is said to be the fourth most commonly used language in the
\nUnited States. On campus, TSD encourages signing at all times and
\nbelieves a full signing environment enhances the quality of life for
\nstudents, families and the TSD Community. <\/p>\n
With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
\nunique identity based on their individual strengths and talents,
\nrather than their disabilities. TSD is an environment where students
