The event is celebrated each year in the U.S. <span id=\"75082ace-3889-4801-a525-c257f0ca8054\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">during<\/span> the last full week of September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Oklahoma School for the Deaf is planning activities to celebrate their rich deaf cultural heritage and educate others about deafness,\u201d said Joe Cordova, executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.<\/p>\n<p>The School for the Deaf is a division of DRS.<\/p>\n<p>Cordova estimated that 182,801 Oklahomans report having \u201chearing difficulties,\u201d according to U.S. Census-based estimates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 We prefer to call this week Deaf Pride Week because we should instill pride in our young, deaf students and educate other people about that pride,\u201d said <span id=\"0e67eaf6-1729-42bb-bcb9-214f49ad485b\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">KaAnn<\/span> Varner, Oklahoma School for the Deaf superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>Varner is believed to be the only deaf, female superintendent of a school for the deaf in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Deaf Pride Week coincides with OSD\u2019s football homecoming week with OSD playing Kansas School for the Deaf at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at 1100 E. Oklahoma Ave. <span id=\"4a7eb590-c8c7-4673-9046-7c67dbb87fb1\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">in<\/span> <span id=\"f4bc5572-c1d0-4603-8cd0-0d60f535af9b\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Sulphur<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of <span id=\"f14da162-1df8-45e3-bf0c-7bc7a1cd9b38\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">activities<\/span>, nationally certified interpreter and entertainer Windell Smith Jr., known as Wink, will conduct workshops and classes with OSD students Sept. 23.
