NAD Board of Directors Approves New ASL Position Statement <\/p>\n
Silver Spring, MD \u0013 The Board of Directors of the National
\nAssociation of the Deaf (NAD) approved a new position statement on
\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) at its January 2008 meeting in Santa Fe,
\nNM. <\/p>\n
The NAD reaffirmed its stance that acquisition of language from birth
\nis a human right for every person, and that deaf infants and children
\nshould be given the opportunity to acquire and develop proficiency in
\nASL as early as possible. ASL is recognized as the sign language of
\nthe American deaf community. <\/p>\n
“This ASL position statement now brings us full circle and draws upon
\nthe original values of our founders,\u001d said Bobbie Beth Scoggins, NAD
\nPresident. \u001cSince 1880, the NAD has worked tirelessly to preserve,
\nprotect, and promote ASL as human right. The NAD also strongly
\nbelieves in the right of deaf children to achieve linguistic fluency
\nin both ASL and English so that they can become fully participating,
\ncontributing, and productive members of American society.\u001d <\/p>\n

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was established in 1880 by
