NAD Settles Complaint Against Delaware Cardiovascular Associates <\/p>\n
Silver Spring, MD – The National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
\nsettled a complaint, filed with the United States Department of
\nJustice against Delaware Cardiovascular Associates, a group of
\ncardiologists located in Delaware. The complaint, which was filed in
\nJune 2007, alleged that Delaware Cardiovascular Associates charged a
\npatient for the cost of providing a sign language interpreter. <\/p>\n
As part of the agreement, Delaware Cardiovascular Associates agreed
\nnot to charge deaf and hard of hearing individuals for the cost of
\nproviding sign language interpreters. Delaware Cardiovascular
\nAssociations further strengthened its policy to ensure effective
\ncommunication with their deaf and hard of hearing patients. <\/p>\n
\u001cThe NAD is pleased that Delaware Cardiovascular Associates has
\nbecome more fully informed about their responsibilities under the
\nAmericans with Disabilities Act,\u001d said Bobbie Beth Scoggins,
\nPresident of the NAD. \u001cWe expect that health care providers to
\nprovide auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication
\nwith individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.\u001d <\/p>\n
The patient and his wife responded to the settlement by sending a
\nnote to the NAD stating, \u001cPlease thank everyone at the NAD legal
\noffice for us! We are truly happy with the final outcome. Most
\nimportantly, improved services to deaf patients will happen because
\nof this effort.\u001d <\/p>\n
