In this workshop provided by the Deaf\/Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) at Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), you will get a taste of the Deaf Interpreter Training Curriculum used to teach people who are deaf to work as interpreters in our community. The overview of this curriculum will focus on five modules:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The fundamentals of deaf interpreter practice<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Consumer assessment \u2013 identifying culture, language, and communication style<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ethnic and culture diversity within the deaf and deaf-blind communities<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ethical considerations and challenges for deaf interpreters<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Interpreting theory and practice; and<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Deaf and hearing interpreter teams.<\/p>\n<p>INTENDED AUDIENCE:<\/p>\n<p>This workshop is designed for two audiences:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Deaf and hard of hearing individuals who have already gone through an interpreter training program (ITP), or who are already certified but who need to expand their job options.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Deaf and hard of hearing individuals who are interested in becoming a Deaf Interpreter at the end of the workshop. You can sign up at the workshop site for the application and screening processes.<\/p>\n<p>ABOUT THE PRESENTER:<\/p>\n<p>Ann Horn, the workshop presenter, works for the DARS Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services as a Program Specialist. Being deaf herself, she is a tireless advocate for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, in various areas such as interpreting services, senior citizens, and communication skills. Ann is also a certified Level III-Intermediary by the DARS\u2019 Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI). Ann is responsible for continuing education units (CEUs) distributed by DHHS. In the area of education, Ann works as an adjunct associate professor at Austin\u00a0Community College (ACC) teaching American Sign Language.
