Police: Security guard stole iPads from school for the deaf<\/strong><\/p>\n

AUSTIN (KXAN) \u2014 Police have issued an arrest warrant for a school security guard they believe stole several iPads from Texas School for the Deaf in mid April, according to an affidavit filed Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Police searched the home of Ian Farias, 24, in late April and allegedly found several of the missing iPads stolen from the campus at 1002 S. Congress Ave.<\/p>\n

Police investigating the theft found no signs of forced entry into the information technology lab where the tablets were stored, leading authorities to believe the theft \u201cmay have been internal,\u201d the affidavit states. Farias allegedly had access to a master key for the school, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

One school employee\u2019s investigative work, searching local iPad sales on Craigslist.org, would lead to the arrest warrant. The employee found one of the missing tablets online and alerted authorities, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

Police confronted the man selling the tablet online. The seller allegedly told authorities he bought the tablet from a \u201clight skinned Hispanic\u201d man. That same Hispanic man also had a phone number that matched Farias\u2019, a school security guard.<\/p>\n

A search of Farias\u2019 home netted several iPads with serial numbers matching those stolen from the school. Farias has been charged with theft, a state jail felony. Travis County jail records do not show him in custody.<\/p>\n

Texas School for the Deaf said all but one of the iPads has been recovered. Farias was terminated two weeks prior to authorities issuing an arrest warrant, according to school officials.<\/p>\n
