Wage\/Hour Status: Exempt<\/p>\n

Reports to: Director of Special Education<\/p>\n

Calendar Schedule: 187-days<\/p>\n

Primary Purpose:<\/p>\n

To provide instruction to deaf and hard of hearing students in the self-contained deaf education classroom or itinerant setting to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.<\/p>\n

Qualifications:
\nEducation\/Certification:
\nBachelor\u2019s degree from accredited university
\nValid Texas teaching certificate in Deaf Education with required endorsements or required
\ntraining to be considered Highly Qualified in the core academic subject areas assigned.<\/p>\n

Special Knowledge\/Skills:
\nKnowledge of core academic subject assigned
\nFluent in sign language
\nAbility to use technology
\nGeneral knowledge of curriculum and instruction
\nAbility to instruct students and manage behavior
\nStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills<\/p>\n

Experience:
\nAt least one-year student teaching or approved internship<\/p>\n

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
\nInstructional Strategies
\nDevelop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district\u2019s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
\nPrepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles and communication modes.
\nPresent subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
\nPlan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
\nConduct assessment of student\u2019s language, communication, present levels of academic achievement and performance, and required testing for the development of an appropriate IEP.
\nWork cooperatively with general education teachers providing in-service training on hearing impairment, modifications and to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
\nCollaborate with general education staff to ensure student success in academic settings.
\nDevelop Annual Goals for the IEP, attend ARDs with required paperwork completed, and complete three-year reevaluation reports on Communication Assessment.
\nPlan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
\nUse technology to strengthen the teaching\/learning process.
\nOther duties as assigned.<\/p>\n

Student Growth and Development
\nHelp students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
\nConduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
\nAssume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
\nBe a positive role model for students, support mission of school district.<\/p>\n

Classroom Management and Organization
\nCreate classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
\nManage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
\nTake all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
\nAssist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as assigned.<\/p>\n

Communication
\nEstablish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
\nMaintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
\nUse effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.<\/p>\n

Professional Growth and Development
\nParticipate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
\nKeep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.<\/p>\n
