Entrepreneurs Prosper at Technology Conference <\/p>\n

Two teams sponsored by The Institute for Innovation and
\nEntrepreneurship at UT Dallas finished \u00e2\u20ac\u0153in the money\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at the CEDIC
\nNew Venture Championship competition held in Arlington on March 26-27.<\/p>\n
The competition, held in connection with the World\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Best
\nTechnology Showcase, was sponsored by the Center for Economic
\nDevelopment, Innovation and Commercialization, a cooperative
\ninitiative of the 12 universities making up the Big 12 Conference. <\/p>\n
First place and a $10,000 prize went to a medical device company,
\nMicroTransponder Inc., headed by Will Rosellini. Rosellini received
\nhis MBA from the School of Management at UT Dallas in 2003 and is
\ncurrently enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Behavioral
\nand Brain Sciences. <\/p>\n
MicroTransponder is commercializing a wireless neurostimulation
\ndevice for the treatment of peripheral nerve pain, based on UT Dallas
\ntechnology originally developed by Dr. Larry Cauller, an associate
\nprofessor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. <\/p>\n
With the first-place finish, MicroTransponder also received an
\ninvitation to compete in the prestigious 2008 Global Moot Corp
\nCompetition sponsored by UT Austin. Dr. Joseph Picken was the faculty
\nadviser. <\/p>\n
Third place and a $2,000 prize went to Pungo Inc., developers of
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ref for the Deaf.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The product, which won the top prize in last
\nfall\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s UT Dallas Business Idea Competition, was represented in the
\nCEDIC competition by MBA students Tim Gutschlag and Jonathon Hoak.
\nRobert Robb was the faculty adviser. <\/p>\n
Pungo is developing a patented, portable, wearable vibrating device
\nto alert deaf participants in sporting events to the referee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s
\nwhistle, buzzer or other signal used to signal a stoppage in play. The
\ndevice is based on patented technology conceived by Celia Beron,
\ncurrently an eighth-grade student in the Richardson Independent School
\nDistrict. Celia is the daughter of Kurt Beron, a Professor in the
\nSchool of Economics, Political and Policy Sciences. <\/p>\n
Teams from UT Austin, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma State, New Mexico,
\nMissouri, and Texas Tech were also represented in the competition. <\/p>\n
The Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is designed to
\nnurtures the devlopment of new ventures at UT Dallas. It is a
\ncollaboration of the schools of Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and
\nBrain Sciences, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Management, Natural
\nSciences and Mathematics, and Economic, Political and Policy Sciences.<\/p>\n
