Exhibit Marks Deaf History Month at Texas School for the Deaf <\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u00e2\u20ac\u201c April 1, 2008 On display now, through mid-April,
\nTexas School for the Deaf (TSD) high school students are displaying a
\nlook at the history of Deaf heritage, Deaf culture and Deaf pride to
\ncommemorate Deaf History Month, March 13-April 15. <\/p>\n
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Deaf History Month on display in
\nthe TSD high school, students have assembled a collection of
\ninteresting items, impressive facts and important resources that
\nhighlight Deaf History, and the history of the Texas School for the
\nDeaf. TSD has a rich history full of notable and successful deaf
\nalumni. Discover the stories behind the buildings named for many
\nformer students on TSD\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s campus and find information about local and
\nstatewide offerings to deaf and hard of hearing. <\/p>\n
Learn how the history of baseball umpire\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s signals came about, who
\nyoung deaf adults view as role models, and the beginning of American
\nSign Language (ASL). TSD Junior, Serina Arellano points out “that
\nAmerican Sign Language is one of the most important aspects of Deaf
\nCulture and the Deaf Community. ASL is cherished in the Deaf
\nCommunity.” Arellano, and her classmates currently enrolled in ASL
\nthis semester, invite the public to get acquainted with the Deaf
\ncommunity. Krystal Johnson, also a Junior, says, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153many people
\nunderestimate us, for who we are, and where we come from. I think the
\ndisplay will help a lot of people appreciate our culture.” See
\nstudents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 own works of art and literature and an interesting version
\nof a timeline detailing Deaf History. Also answer a fun, factual
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Question of the Day\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, which will contribute to classroom
\ndiscussions as studies focus on Deaf History at TSD throughout the
\nmonth. <\/p>\n
Deaf History Month, marks the anniversary of the Deaf President Now
\n(DPN) movement in 1988 on the campus of Gallaudet University in
\nWashington D.C., when students demanded a deaf president lead the
\nworld’s only university for deaf and hard of hearing. March 13, 1988,
\nI. King Jordan was named President of Gallaudet, the institution\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s
\neighth – and first – deaf president. Other important milestones in
\nDeaf history that are remembered during the month is the founding of
\nGallaudet University on April 8, when President Lincoln signed the
\nschool\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s charter in 1864 to establish a college for the deaf. And on
\nApril 15, the American School for the Deaf – the first public school
\nfor deaf – opened its doors in 1817. <\/p>\n
Founded in 1857, the Texas School for the Deaf is the oldest
\ncontinuously operating publicly funded school in Texas. As well as
\nproviding and exemplary education to Texas students who are deaf and
\nhard of hearing, TSD serves as a resource center on deafness for
\nstudents, parents, professionals and others throughout the state. With
\na strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
\nunique identity based on their individual strengths and talents,
\nrather than their disabilities. TSD is an environment where students
