At the Austin Children’s Museum – alongside the
museum’s featured exhibit “Play It By Ear”, which invites
visitors to touch, experiment, and interact with musical works of art
– visitors will also see a number of professional paintings and
mixed-media pieces by well-known deaf artists as well as interactive
displays and works produced by TSD students.

“We are really pleased to showcase this very special art here for
the public to enjoy”, says Cybil Gustafson, Education Manager for
the Children’s Museum. “With sound as the focus of the museum’s
featured display, these pieces selected from the deaf artists, paired
with works done by deaf and hard of hearing students, really join
nicely together to provide a full spectrum sensory experience to
museum visitors.” And you don’t have to hear to appreciate it. You
can see sound and music translated visually and feel sound vibrations
in many of the museum’s exhibit components.

An educational component accompanies the “Deaf Artists in the
Community and Schools” exhibit with VSA Arts of Texas presenting
student workshops at TSD led by several of the deaf artists. Lesson
plans, developed by Lamar University Deaf Education students,
complement the exhibit for teachers’ classroom use prior to
students’ visit to the museum. April Sullivan of VSA Arts of Texas,
an Austin nonprofit that aims to promote the creative power in people
with disabilities to facilitate full access to the cultural and
educational arts, says “this is a unique opportunity for everyone in
the community. For young students to see art produced by older
students and work with professionals who are successful despite
challenges they have faced, really sends a positive message. You see
that the light goes off and kids say ‘Hey, I can do that too!’.”
Working together, Lamar University, the Austin Children’s Museum,
VSA Arts of Texas and the Texas School for the Deaf, hope this unique
exhibit and learning opportunity not only inspires creative
exploration and artistic expression, but also helps to bridge hearing
and deaf cultures with an appreciation for art.

With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
unique identity based on their individual strengths and talents,
rather than their disabilities. TSD is an environment where students
learn, grow, and belong. For more information about TSD, visit
http://www.tsd.state.tx.us
.
