STUDENT VISUAL ARTS SHOW AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF <\/p>\n
GALLERY OPEN LATE FOR FIRST THURSDAY ON SOUTH CONGRESS <\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u2013 April 29, 2008 Student art work is on display and
\nopen to the public at the Texas School for the Deaf\u2019s (TSD) annual
\nspring Visual Arts Show, though Friday May 2. In TSD\u2019s Kleberg
\nGallery, student\u2019s works include art, woodworking, photography,
\ndigital graphics, multimedia, and a number of student produced videos
\nfrom TSD\u2019s Impact Studio. <\/p>\n
Also among student works, TSD shows the \u201cDeaf Artists in the
\nCommunity and Schools\u201d collection, on exhibit in Austin thanks to
\nLamar University in Beaumont and a grant from the National Endowment
\nfor the Arts. Visitors will see works from eight well-known deaf
\nartists, as well as pieces produced by students that range from
\nphotographs, sculptures and paintings to multimedia, animation and Web
\ndesign. The collection aims to encourage a greater focus on deaf art
\nin deaf education as well as an appreciation and understanding of deaf
\nculture. TSD Senior, DeLasha Singleton says, “this art show is a
\nfantastic example of Deaf Culture. I wish everyone in Austin would
\ncome and see it.” <\/p>\n
Working all semester, student\u2019s anticipation has been building for
\nthis public debut of their own. Many of the student artists were
\nastounded when they entered the Visual Arts Show for the first time
\nthemselves. A recently transformed plain, dull meeting room, The
\nKelberg Gallery space is a complimentary backdrop for the student\u2019s
\nart. \u201cThis really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have our
\nwork displayed with such famous Deaf Artists\u201d, says Felina Ruiz, TSD
\nSenior. \u201cTheir work really challenges us to think more about the
\ndepth of our own ideas and pushes us to be serious about our work.” <\/p>\n
