{"id":33796,"date":"2016-07-02T16:39:10","date_gmt":"2016-07-02T21:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=33796"},"modified":"2016-07-02T16:39:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-02T21:39:10","slug":"deaf-texans-say-theyre-being-denied-drivers-ed-courses-by-tea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2016\/07\/02\/deaf-texans-say-theyre-being-denied-drivers-ed-courses-by-tea\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Texans Say They&#8217;re Being Denied Driver&#8217;s Ed Courses by TEA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deaf Texans Say They&#8217;re Being Denied Driver&#8217;s Ed Courses by TEA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By Stef Manisero<\/p>\n<p>June 29, 2016<\/p>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving Texans who are deaf.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiff claims driving instruction schools won&#8217;t allow people who are deaf to take the classes needed to get a driver&#8217;s license.<\/p>\n<p>Deaf driving instructors say communication is critical in learning how to drive, and every student should have equal access.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas School for the Deaf provides a driver&#8217;s ed course for its own students, as well as deaf students who attend traditional schools.<\/p>\n<p>A student said she wasn&#8217;t allowed to take a driver&#8217;s ed course because interpreters weren&#8217;t available.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt like I didn&#8217;t have access, I wasn&#8217;t equivalent to a hearing person, and it felt oppressive like they had completely dismissed me and ignored my rights.
