Workshop Overview:<\/p>\n

Persons who provide communication access in psychological, neuro-psychological and\/or psycho-educational evaluations\/assessments can be put into a highly stressful and counterproductive situation if they are not familiar with testing protocol and the testing instruments being utilized. Being familiar, in part, assists the individual in meeting the definition of being qualified to work these assignments. To be qualified for such assignments, an individual not only needs to know how to interpret the spoken\/signed word but also interpret the intended purpose of each protocol.<\/p>\n

Unknowingly, an interpreter may give the answer to a test question in their interpretation or skew the response of the person being tested due to their interpretation. Handled inappropriately, a spelling test can become a sign vocabulary inventory or a test of immediate recall. Interpreting for assessment follow-up meetings where testing results are discussed can as stressful without an adequate information-base.<\/p>\n

Participants will learn how to overcome these barriers through a round robin exposure technique. Several commonly used testing instruments will be presented and discussed during this hands-on presentation. These include:<\/p>\n

* Bender-Gestalt Test,
\n* House-Tree-Person (HTP) Test,
\n* Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and
\n* Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)<\/p>\n

Discussion will also cover vocabulary standards in testing, measurement and statistics. Information about the Diagnostic and Standards Manual (DSM \u2013 V), used in diagnostic\/evaluation reporting, will also be included.<\/p>\n

Learner Outcomes:<\/p>\n

* Become familiar with what some standards testing material are designed to assess.
\n* Become familiar with some standard testing protocol used in assessments.
\n* Become familiar with approaches in working with diagnosticians, psychologists and assessment assistants who are not cognizant with test and measurements of persons who do not have full access to incidental learning.<\/p>\n

Presenter Bio:<\/p>\n

Doug has been in the field of working with persons who are deaf\/hard of hearing for over 40 years. Before moving to Austin in 1999 to join the staff of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, he worked as a licensed professional counselor\/licensed chemical dependency counselor through his own interpreting and services company serving persons who were deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, late deafened and their service providers. His undergraduate studies were in audiology, habilitation of the deaf, learning disabilities and speech\/language. His graduate work was in counseling and psychological tests\/measurements. His post-graduate work has been in chemical dependency and public administration. As an interpreter, Doug possesses Texas BEI III\/Court Interpreter Certification (CIC). He was first certified by the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf (TSID) in 1981 and by Texas BEI in 1983.<\/p>\n

Currently, he directs the state\u2019s newborn hearing screening program which is second in services scope only to Great Britain. Through his current company, deSign and Consulting Services, he provides consulting work, workshops, as well as, communication access services primarily in emergency medical and court\/court proceedings for Communication by Hand, an Austin-based interpreting services company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
