This course is designed to prepare ASL interpreters for interpreting in investigate, medical\/forensic or social service settings where issues of domestic violence or sexual assault may be discussed. This dynamic workshop will be taught in ASL, and will include a mixture of presentation, role play and hands on activities, and in depth discussion.<\/p>\n

Throughout the workshop, interpreters will actively explore considerations for managing the ethical dilemmas that can arise when interpreting in these highly sensitive circumstances. The work so will be provide an overview of the dynamics of violence in the Deaf community, understanding the iomplexities of trauma and secondary trauma, self care considerations for interpreters, ethical dilemmas, strategies to exercise professional boundaries and manage confidentiality and conflicts of interest, approaches to avoid victim blaming terminology, and use of best practice terminology and signs.<\/p>\n
