About the Workshop: This all day session is targeted at service providers who specialize in some aspect of deafness (teachers, interpreters, counselors, therapists, rehabilitation specialists, direct care staff, etc.). Deb Guthmann will discuss various aspects of substance use dependency and how it impacts individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, their family, and the deaf community. This course will include a discussion of barriers that deaf\/hard of hearing individuals face and unique characteristics of the population, impact within the educational environment, best practice related to clinical approaches, relapse prevention, aftercare, self help information that is part of the recovery process for deaf and hard of hearing individuals and an exploration of resources available.<\/p>\n

Deb Guthmann, Ed.D, NIC is a consultant working in the area of substance abuse and mental health issues. She retired as the Director of Pupil Personnel Services at the California School for the Deaf, Fremont where she oversaw all clinical services. She is the former founding Director of the Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals, which is one of the first inpatient treatment programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals in the country. Dr. Guthmann has made over 150 national and international presentations, written numerous articles and several book chapters focusing on ethical issues, substance abuse and treatment models to use with Deaf and Hard\u00a0of Hearing individuals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
