Antigua is part of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean and was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Columbus named the island after Santa Maria la Antigua, a saint of Seville, Spain. Admiral Nelson arrived at the island in 1784 and Nelson\u2019s Dockyard was built. At the end of the 18th century, Antigua became the gateway to the Caribbean. Well maintained historical sites are fortifications ruins and stone towers from cane-processing windmills. The very well preserved English Harbourtown is very popular with tourists.<\/p>\n
