2008 GRADUATING CLASS CELEBRATES ACHIEVEMENTS AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE
\nDEAF <\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u2013 June 5, 2007 Today at 7:00 PM, graduates from the
\nTexas School for the Deaf\u2019s (TSD) Class of 2008 receive their
\ndiplomas and celebrate their achievements among friends and family
\nduring commencement ceremonies in the R. L. Davis Auditorium at 1102
\nSouth Congress Avenue. <\/p>\n
Esteemed alumna, professional actress, rights advocate, and inspiring
\nrole model, Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins, returns to the podium at TSD
\ntonight delivering the keynote address to impart wisdom and advice for
\nsuccess beyond high school to these emerging leaders. Dr. Scoggins was
\nvaledictorian at the Texas School for the Deaf in 1973. <\/p>\n
Dr. Scoggins, president of the National Association of the Deaf
\n(NAD), earned her BA in Psychology and Masters in Administration and
\nSupervision from California State University at Northridge, and holds
\na Doctorate of Education in Institutional Management from Pepperdine
\nUniversity\u2019s School of Education and Psychology. Prior to being
\nelected NAD President in 2006, Dr. Scoggins was the Education
\nCabinet\u2019s Executive Director for the state of Kentucky\u2019s
\nCommission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and served as the NAD
\nRegion II Board representative. Though Scoggins has appeared on Oprah
\nand is well known for having performed the lead role as Sarah in
\nChildren of a Lesser God in theatre productions across the U.S. and on
\nBroadway, Scoggins has accomplished milestones in business,
\ngovernment, education, advocacy and leadership. In California,
\nScoggins founded a recovery center for the deaf for alcohol and drug
\nabuse. Her passion for sports landed her positions with the U.S.
\nOlympic Committee and the U.S.A. Deaf Sports Federation, leading U.S.
\nTeam Delegations to Deaflympic and Pan Am Games. Scoggins also serves
\nas a Vice President for America\u2019s Athletes with Disabilities. Claire
\nBugen, TSD\u2019s Superintendent says \u201cit is inspirational for these
\nstudents to see a TSD graduate rise to prominence in such a variety of
\nfields. In her current position as president of NAD, she represents
\nthe interests and concerns of all deaf Americans. If she can do that,
\nthen what future accomplishments await this graduating class?\u201d <\/p>\n
Texas School for the Deaf, located in South Austin, is the oldest
\ncontinuously operating publicly funded school in Texas. Opened in 1857
\nwith only four students, the campus now serves students ages 0-22, and
\nprovides outreach and educational resources for deaf students, their
\nfamilies and professionals in the field throughout the state of Texas.

\ncommunity that allows students to form a unique identity based on
\ntheir individual strengths and talents, rather than their
