Presented by Ms. Randi Turner (BAAS, DHHS Advanced, RID CI\/CT)<\/p>\n

Ms. Randi Turner is the Accessibility and Disability Rights Coordinator of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities. Ms Turner previously served as the Communication Access Specialist of the Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHHS) for the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), and held positions at its legacy agency, the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.<\/p>\n

The presenter will provide a quick overview of federal and state laws, rules, policies, and recommendations that outline specifics to appropriate interpreting protocol, specifically, what is a “qualified interpreter?”. Deaf Community members will join us to talk about what” qualified interpreting” means to them and what to do when you are coerced into interpreting something for which you find out you are not qualified.<\/p>\n

This can often be pertinent to educational interpreters. How do you determine if you are qualified for the job? What ethical decision-making steps do you walk through to decide this? What happens when you are in the middle of the situation and all the sudden you are knee deep in mud?<\/p>\n

Ms Turner will also provide 2017 legislative updates and share information regarding bills proposed that directly impact Deaf and interpreting communities. Find out ways you can support your profession through the legislative process.<\/p>\n
