Deaf priests get OK for seminary<\/p>\n
CASTLE HILLS, Texas \u2014 After a drawn-out fight with neighbors and
\nthe City Council, a group of deaf priests will be permitted to run a
\nseminary from a sprawling home here.<\/p>\n
The City Council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to give the Rev. Tom Coughlin a
\nspecial use permit for his home, where he plans to run a seminary for
\nhearing-impaired men who want to become Catholic priests.<\/p>\n
Some residents of Castle Hills, a northwest suburb of San Antonio,
\nhad heavily resisted the effort, previously denying the permit because
\nit will take the 8,100-square-foot house off the tax rolls. Some
\nneighbors also feared it would open the door to group homes or
\nfraternities.<\/p>\n
“I hope that you are happy to live in a city that you are slowly
\ndestroying,” said Councilman Tom Davis, who voted to approve the
\npermit.<\/p>\n
Davis said Coughlin’s attorneys found a “legal loophole” in federal
\nlaw on the use of religious lands and institutions.<\/p>\n
Andrew Sanchez, who has been working with Coughlin on the seminary
\nproject, said he does not believe the seminary will be destructive to
\nthe community.<\/p>\n
