Workshop Info:<\/strong><\/p>\n

This intensive, 3-hour workshop is intended to give interpreters the opportunity to examine sexuality issues, explore values\/attitudes\/beliefs about sexuality, identify situations where skills with sexuality interpreting would be useful, and apply what was learned to interpreting practice.<\/p>\n

Participants will be equipped with appropriate and effective tools to become more comfortable with interpreting sexuality content. This workshop does not only discuss sexuality issues, but also to discuss the importance of consent. Consent is not applicable only in sexual relationships, but it is also applicable in professional relationships between an interpreter and client. This will be a fun and enlightening experience for workshop attendants.<\/p>\n

BIO: Bethany Gehman, a sexuality educator, has more than four years of experience in providing sexual health education and professional training, and she is currently advocating for safer space at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. As an advocate and Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) student organization\u2019s advisor, Bethany has worked extensively with TSD\u2019s academic and student life programs for the past two years, in terms of training teachers and staff. Bethany provides sexuality education for people of all ages, conducts professional training, and promotes inclusive and comprehensive sexual health education in Deaf K-12 residential programs. She has provided sexuality workshops and LGBTQ training at Deaf Women United National Conference, Aspen Camp\u2019s Womxn Retreat and summer camp, Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s National Technical Institute for the Deaf Student Life, Safe Place, and Texas School for the Deaf. Her current research focuses on examining the current climate of Deaf residential schools in the United States and providing resources to promote an inclusive environment for LGBTQ students and staff. When Bethany is not busy with her community work, she creates high-quality and accessible American Sign Language YouTube videos on human sexuality. She is currently pursuing an M.Ed in Human Sexuality Education at Widener University.
