What measurements does the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) test focus on? What type of scoring system is used? Objective scoring is used but how does adaptability, pronunciation, fluency and delivery come into the scoring process? While the cut-off number for objective unit errors is exact, a range of unit errors is established for the subjective score. An overview of the BEI testing process will be provided to participants. The formats of the written Test of English Proficiency (TEP) and the Performance Test will be discussed, in addition to reviews of the rating process and examples of scoring determinants.<\/p>\n

To earn DHHS General Studies CEUs (accepted by BEI), participants must take a pre-test (link in registration confirmation email) and a post-test (link sent following the webinar), and also remain actively engaged in the webinar via random interactive polls throughout the session. If you need RID CEUs, contact an RID CEU provider in advance of the session to request PINRA approval to earn CEUs.<\/p>\n

About Lauri:<\/p>\n

Lauri Metcalf is the Chair of the Department of American Sign Language Interpreter Training and also Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services at San Antonio College, a position she has held since its inception in 1994. Lauri\u2019s work experience spans over 40 years as a teacher of deaf preschool and kindergarten students, as an interpreter trainer and as a certified interpreter. She has been actively involved with the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) since 1995. Lauri has presented numerous workshops and training seminars for interpreters throughout the United States.<\/p>\n

Have you, as an interpreter, witnessed discrimination against your client in the workplace setting while you are on the job? What can you do in those situations without overstepping ethical boundaries?<\/p>\n

Amanda Tuite, Communication Access Specialist, will discuss Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits companies from discriminating against Deaf employees. The role of an interpreter when encountering discrimination will be discussed, and participants will come away equipped with strategies to apply in those situations.<\/p>\n

The participants will be able to:<\/p>\n

– Describe the basic requirements of the ADA under Title I regarding communication access for persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing
\n– Clarify common misconceptions regarding the ADA, Title I and how it applies to sign language interpreters
\n– Utilize strategies to educate consumers and refer to appropriate resources within the role of an interpreter.<\/p>\n
