Deaf Dance Group Moves To The Feel of the Music<\/p>\n

They are dancers who feel music rather than hear it. And Friday
\nevening, they plan to take the stage for a very different type of
\nperformance.<\/p>\n
The hearing-impaired dancers with the San Antonio Deaf Dance Company
\nare hoping to inspire others.<\/p>\n
“I like to be able to feel the music,” explained 17-year-old Ruby
\nYbarra. “Doing expressions, learning the steps and the counts. Doing
\nit myself. Am trying to do, you know, have good energy and good
\nemotion.”<\/p>\n
The dance company teaches deaf and hard of hearing students about the
\narts. The team is made up of 25 middle and high students.<\/p>\n
“I could feel the beat and, like, it’s in my body, and I could move
\nto it,” said16-year-old Viviana Plata. And like, I can hear fine. But
\nI like it more here, cause I can feel it in my body, and it makes me
\nmore open.”<\/p>\n
The camp lasts 3 weeks, and the organizer told News 4 it’s an
\neye-opening experience for the kids.<\/p>\n
“They see that, uh, there’s life after high school,” said organizer
\nCarol Ann Brodersen. “That they don’t just stay at home and do
\nnothing. They go onto college programs.”<\/p>\n
The students have a bright future, and through their performance,
\nthey want to send a message to everyone.<\/p>\n
“I want them to know that everyone’s the same, and that we could
\ndance the same. It doesn’t matter if you can’t hear or you can hear.
\nIt’s just about the inside that counts,” said Plata.<\/p>\n
The performance is Friday at 7pm at the Clark High Auditorium.
\nAdmission is free, but they will accept donations at the door.<\/p>\n
