The first module of the series focuses on the theoretical and conceptual base of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (aka the Colonomos Model) in a low stress environment. The training offers specific language to discuss interpreting work. Practice opportunities will be provided from ASL to English.<\/p>\n

Learning<\/p>\n

Gain a deeper understanding of what it means to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities beginning in consecutive mode and moving to simultaneous mode in latter sessions. Working on skills such as text analysis, back translations and collaborative interpreting in small-group format, you will develop tools for understanding and improving your interpreting process. You will develop the language necessary to discuss the interpreting task with colleagues, using non-evaluative and non-judgmental language.<\/p>\n

Betty M. Colonomos, currently serving as Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center, is a\u00a0fluent ASL\/English bilingual. Her academic background is in Deaf Education\/Speech\u00a0Pathology (B.S.), Counseling (M.A.) Linguistics (Doctoral program). Betty holds the Masters\u00a0Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC) from RID. She was the second recipient of the Mary\u00a0Stotler Award for excellence in Interpreter Education from CIT. Betty has chaired and served\u00a0on many national committees on standards and evaluation of interpreters and served as\u00a0President of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT). Ms. Colonomos has authored and\u00a0appeared in video materials on interpreting and she co-authored (with MJ Bienvenu) videos\u00a0on Deaf Culture, ASL Facial Grammar, and ASL Numbers. She worked as an International\u00a0Sign interpreter for numerous conferences worldwide.<\/p>\n

Betty also consults with schools and the legal system as an expert on linguistic and cultural issues impacting the Deaf Community. Betty is the developer of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI), which is the most widely used model in the U.S. for teaching cognitive processes in interpreting. She teaches the Foundations of Interpreting Series for hearing, coda (Deaf-parented), and Deaf interpreters that combines the IMI with a Vygotskyan approach to learning. Betty is the creator of the Etna Project (2002\u2013present) held in New Hampshire\u00a0and Maryland. The project is a series of retreats supporting a Community of Reflective Practitioners who are interpreters committed to their own growth as they seek to become change agents in the field of interpreting.<\/p>\n

\nFoundations I requires some pre-knowledge and is presented in spoken English. It is appropriate for interpreters and advanced interpreting students (hearing & Deaf-parented\/coda).<\/p>\n

Participants will be awarded 1.3 CEUs in the Professional Studies category. BEI & RID pending.<\/p>\n
