Her mother Lesa Thomas interprets.<\/p>\n<p>MORE VIDEOS \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Miss Deaf Texas 2007-2009, Katherine \u201cKatie\u201d Deshea Murch, 22, of<br \/>\nCorpus Christi, was selected 1st runner-up Thursday night in the Miss<br \/>\nDeaf America pageant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an experience that will help me in my life,\u201d said Murch<br \/>\nvia e-mail Friday. \u201cI am very proud, and honestly, I see my 1st<br \/>\nrunner-up position more like a wing woman role. I am excited to see<br \/>\nwhat the future brings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murch, a student at Texas A&amp;M University &#8211; Corpus Christi and<br \/>\ngraduate of Flour Bluff schools, was one of 22 women vying for the<br \/>\ntitle this week at the New Orleans Marriott during the National<br \/>\nAssociation of the Deaf biannual convention.<\/p>\n<p>If the newly crowned Miss Deaf America 2008-2010, Michelle Lapides of<br \/>\nMaryland, is unable to fulfil her role then Murch as 1st runner-up<br \/>\nwill become the national ambassador for the association\u2019s 28 million<br \/>\ndeaf and hard of hearing Americans. If not called for the role, Murch,<br \/>\nwho received a $3,000 scholarship, plaque, and bouquet, will continue<br \/>\nher work as Miss Deaf Texas. The pageant\u2019s 2nd runner-up is JoAnn<br \/>\nBenfield of Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>The national pageant\u2019s three-day preliminary competition began<br \/>\nMonday with contestants being judged in private interviews, platform<br \/>\npresentations, talent and evening gown presence. Murch won Best<br \/>\nPlatform Presentation, as an advocate for better education for deaf<br \/>\npeople, in her preliminary group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKatherine stunned all of us during her performance the entire<br \/>\nweek,\u201d said Laura Loeb-Hill, a former Miss Deaf Texas now in charge<br \/>\nof the state pageant for Texas Association of the Deaf. \u201cShe<br \/>\nrepresented the Lone Star state well.
