The directive follows a report sent today to TEA from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) regarding compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In his letter to Commissioner Morath, Governor Abbott expressed his deep concern with the current state of special education in Texas and stated that more must be done to adequately address the needs of our most vulnerable students.

“The past dereliction of duty on the part of many school districts to serve our students, and the failure of TEA to hold districts accountable, are worthy of criticism,” said Governor Abbott. “TEA must take steps now to significantly increase the oversight provided to ensure our special education students are receiving the services they deserve. But while the problems identified in the report started long before your arrival at TEA, our parents and students demand significant actions be taken now to improve special education in Texas.”

While federal officials have provided no definitive timeline for TEA, Governor Abbott has called for an initial corrective action plan draft within the next seven days. Following the completion of the initial plan, it will be shared with representatives of parent groups, special education advocacy groups, as well as administrators and educators throughout the state.

Additionally, the Governor has asked TEA to develop potential legislative recommendations that will help ensure local school districts are in compliance with all federal and state laws regarding special education.

###

See Governor Greg Abbott Letter: (PDF) TEA_LETTER_1_11_18

SOURCE:

https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-directs-tea-to-take-action-to-fix-special-education-in-texa

SOURCE #2:

http://www.kvue.com/news/local/gov-abbott-sets-out-to-revamp-special-education-system-in-texas/507191021

SOURCE #3:

https://www.click2houston.com/news/governor-abbott-directs-tea-to-take-action-to-fix-special-education

In case you miss earlier article with Washington Post article regarding Texas and Special Education

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2016/09/18/what-texas-did-to-its-special-education-students/?utm_term=.22e076a6db99

Governor Abbott Directs TEA To Take Action To Fix Special Education in Texas For Immediate Distribution January 11, 2018 (512) 463-1826 Governor Abbott Directs TEA To Take Action To Fix Special Education In Texas AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[2
25974,25845,7956,7957,25973,5075,3694,3698,2680
post-36962","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-deaf-news","tag-doe","tag-governor-greg-abbott","tag-idea","tag-individuals-with-disabilities-education-act","tag-mike-morath","tag-special-education","tag-tea","tag-texas-education-agency","tag-u-s-department-of-education
https://deafnetwork.com/wordpress/blog/2018/01/11/governor-abbott-appoints-bauman-to-governors-committee-on-people-with-disabilities/
Governor Abbott Appoints Bauman To Governor’s Committee On People With Disabilities January 8, 2018 Austin, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ellen M.
