Deaf Studies, Deaf Education receive federal grant <\/p>\n

Lamar University\u2019s internationally renowned Department of Deaf
\nStudies and Deaf Education has earned a $760,000 grant from the U.S.
\nDepartment of Education. Universities in 14 states were awarded $4.37
\nmillion to help train doctoral students to work with children with
\ndisabilities. Lamar will receive the funds over four years. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis was a leadership competition of all the doctoral programs in
\nthe United States with special education programs,\u201d said Tony
\nMartin, chair of Lamar\u2019s Department of Deaf Studies and Deaf
\nEducation. \u201cWe were the only deaf education program in the nation to
\nreceive a grant.\u201d <\/p>\n
Lamar\u2019s Doctor of Education in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education is
\none of two in the United States. The nationally certified program is
\nthe largest graduate program of its kind in Texas. It attracts
\nmaster\u2019s and doctoral students from outside the United States. <\/p>\n
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the grants will help
\nchildren with disabilities by training doctoral and post-doctoral
\nstudents in early intervention, special education or related services.
\nSome money will also be used to prepare master’s degree students for
\nspecial education administration and supervision. <\/p>\n
“We hope to build a corps of highly qualified personnel to help
\nchildren with disabilities reach their academic potential,” said U.S.
\nSecretary of Education Margaret Spellings. “Research has consistently
\nsuggested that there is a persistent need for additional special
\neducation and related services personnel who have been trained at the
\ndoctoral and post-doctoral levels. These experts can play a critical
\nrole in improving the quality of services for children with
\ndisabilities and their families.” <\/p>\n
Lamar will receive $190,000 a year for four years, beginning in 2009.
\nThe money will help fund student scholarships, research, travel to
\nconferences and a coordinator to oversee the grant. \u201cThe most
\nimportant thing is to provide financial assistance to students
\npursuing an advanced degree,\u201d said Martin. \u201cMost people do not
\nfully realize the financial hardship associated with obtaining a
\nhigher degree.\u201d <\/p>\n
Jean Andrews, coordinator of Lamar\u2019s graduate programs in Deaf
\nStudies and Deaf Education, led the grant application process and will
\nbe the project director for the grant while Martin oversees the
\nbudgetary allotment of the endowment. <\/p>\n
