Deaf Space in the Mental Health Setting<\/p>\n

This session will discuss the work of a deaf interpreter in the mental health setting.<\/p>\n

Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Identify and explore the differences between language dysfluency and language deprivation.<\/li>\n
  2. Understand the necessary considerations when working with children who are deaf in the mental health setting, and the role of the deaf interpreter as cultural gatekeeper.<\/li>\n
  3. Identify interpreting techniques to employ in the mental health setting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Do You Hear Voices That are Distressing?<\/p>\n

    This session will simulate the experience of hearing voices while participating in everyday tasks.<\/p>\n

    Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Review and analyze common intake questions related to auditory and visual hallucinations.<\/li>\n
    2. Discuss interpreting techniques to employ in the mental health setting.<\/li>\n
    3. Debrief post-simulation regarding the implications of hearing voices and mental health care for D\/HH patients.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Role Space and Demand-Control Schema in the Mental Health Setting<\/p>\n

      1:00 PM – 4:00 PM<\/p>\n

      This session will introduce Demand-Control Schema and Role-Space, and their application to interpreting in the mental health setting. Participants will analyze ethical situations and challenge the misconceptions of “that’s not my role” and “it depends”. The presentation will focus on Demand-Control Schema and the Proposed Constructs as developed by Robyn Dean and Robert Pollard, in conjunction with an introduction to Role-Space as developed by Robert Lee and Peter Llewellyn-Jones.<\/p>\n

      Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Understand the 4 types of demands faced in ethical decision-making.<\/li>\n
      2. Identify and articulate controls in response to demands.<\/li>\n
      3. Identify prioritized\/forfeited values and the resultant demands.<\/li>\n
      4. Examine role space and the planes of interaction management, participant alignment, and presentation of self.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
