Rules, regulations and
registration forms for the Cook-Off are available on the Deaf Action
Center Web site at www.deadfactioncentertexas.org. Registration
packets are also available at the Plano Legacy YMCA. Registration fee
is $50 per three-person team.

Each Cook-Off team is responsible for providing its own chicken
drumsticks. A quantity of at least one dozen is required, but teams
are recommended to provide more than 20 for the Community Tasters. At
judging, each of the three Kick’n Chick’n Judges, each with some
sort of culinary background, will be presented with one drumstick to
taste.

Booth set-up and kitchen preparation begins at 9 a.m. and judging
will be held at 1 p.m.

The Plano and Collin County communities are welcome to attend and
sample the entries between noon and 3 p.m. The Cook-Off is free, but
DAC will gladly take donations.

According to the Deaf Awareness Center, more than one million people
in Texas have a hearing loss. The Deaf Awareness Center in Dallas
serves nearly 5,000 people, directly and indirectly, in the Plano and
Collin County area.

“The Cook-Off is just as much a community awareness event as a
fundraiser,” Giles said. “For a non-profit organization to
continue to provide services to an increasing number of deaf and
hard-of-hearing people, fundraising is necessary.

The DAC provides one-on-one training and various workshops for family
and professional situations.

“In the advent technologies that aid the hard-of-hearing and the
increasing number of Baby Boomers, hearing loss is inevitable, whether
it is minor or major,” said Angela Fisher, DAC Executive Director.
“The DAC strives to inspire and provide hope and a support system to
those with any degree of hearing loss.”

The Plano Legacy YMCA is located at 5101 Tennyson Pkwy in West Plano.
More information about the Plano Legacy YMCA location can be found
online at http://www.planoymca.org
.

The Deaf Action Center (DAC) was established in l975, at the request
of a group of local deaf citizens who recognized the need for an
agency dedicated to eliminating barriers for the deaf and
hard-of-hearing. Founded by visionaries, John and Elizabeth Criswell,
DAC was conceived to act as an advocate and service provider, catering
to the unique needs of people with hearing loss. The Deaf Action
Center was initially organized under the Dallas Council for the Deaf,
but as the Council had little experience in providing direct client
services, the Deaf Action Center project would soon become an entity
in itself. On Aug. 29, 1977, Deaf Action Center was incorporated as a
non-profit agency and moved to its present location at 3115 Crestview
Drive in Dallas. Elizabeth Criswell, one of the center’s original
founders, became the first Executive Director.

Presently, the dedicated staff at Deaf Action Center continues to
implement the most comprehensive range of programs and services
available to the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Community, more than 30
years after the creation of the DAC. With offices in Abilene, Dallas,
Longview and also serving the Nacogdoches area, Deaf Action Center is
considered a ‘benchmark’ service provider, both nationally and
internationally, and maintains its original mission of eliminating
barriers, and making a positive difference in the lives of those with
hearing loss.

More information about the Deaf Action Center can be found online at
http://www.deafactioncentertexas.org

Sources:
http://www.planostar.com/articles/2008/08/05/plano_star-courier/news/69.txt

—

BETTER IP RELAY – EVERYWHERE! i711.com makes all your relay calls better.
Better web calls.
