Disclosing Disability: When and if to Disclose <\/p>\n
This training will focus on the factors to consider when making the
\ndetermination to disclose disability to a potential employer. Many
\npeople are not trained on how to make this determination and need to
\nhave the appropriate tools to be able to make informed decisions about
\n\u201cif and when\u201d to disclose disability. <\/p>\n

Disclosing Disability <\/p>\n
Disclosure of disability presents a number of challenges and choices
\nfor people with a disability. Often consumers are not trained on how
\nto deal with this is-sue. There are a number of key factors to
\nconsider when making the determination \u201cwhen\u201d or \u201cif\u201d to
\ndisclose: <\/p>\n
How does the applicant\u2019s letter of interest and resume look? Is a
\ndisability apparent? <\/p>\n
Does the applicant need an accommodation for the interview process? <\/p>\n
Who will arrange accommodations for the interview process? <\/p>\n
How does the applicant communicate their disability? <\/p>\n
Does the applicant know what the essential functions of the job
\ninclude? <\/p>\n
Will accommodations be needed to enable job performance? <\/p>\n
Is it better to be strategic on the applicant\u2019s part and disclose
\ndisability after employment begins? <\/p>\n
How are accommodations requested and what is the applicant\u2019s
\nexperience <\/p>\n
With use of accommodations and in requesting accommodations? <\/p>\n
Where is the emphasis, on a \u201cqualified\u201d person with a disability
\n(emphasizing the word qualified) or on a person who is disabled. <\/p>\n
What are the responsibilities of the applicant or employee once a
\ndisability is disclosed? <\/p>\n
Does the employer have less than 15 employees? <\/p>\n
Multiple disabilities that may not be apparent. Should these be
\ndisclosed, if so when? <\/p>\n
Some people choose to disclose their disability because they know
\nthey will need accommodations at the interview, or for training on the
\njob. Others may choose not to disclose disability for fear an
\ninterview may never be offered, or that their disability will become
\nthe focus of the interview instead of their \u201cabilities\u201d. In the
\nend the decision to disclose is a personal one, but special factors
\nshould be considered so the best decision is made. <\/p>\n

Randi Turner serves as the Communications Access Specialist at DARS
\nOffice for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. She works with agencies
\nand service providers regarding their access obligations under the
\nAmericans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. Her
\ntraining empowers people who are deaf or hard of hearing with
\nknowledge of their civil rights and provides advocacy skills. She also
\nprovides training to parents of children with hearing loss regarding
\ntheir rights under the IDEA. <\/p>\n
