Working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students for Success in Mathematics<\/strong>
\nDeafTEC Math Conference<\/strong>

\nNovember 4-6, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Austin, Texas \u2013 November 4 \u2013 Today, over 100 educators who work with deaf and hard of hearing students all across the country are in Austin for an intensive mathematics conference thanks to DeafTEC (Technological Education Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students) – administered by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf – and Texas partners, the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) and the Austin Community College.\u00a0 DeafTEC\u2019s Teacher Training shares best practices to promote increased access to learning for deaf and hard of hearing students, and helps teachers and counselors to best understand select STEM careers and opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
\nA full day tomorrow led by top colleagues in the field, educators will explore instructional avenues and ideas that stress problem solving and student engagement in teaching mathematics.
\nThen from the learners\u2019 perspective, day three is an open dialogue with a student-led panel to delve into strategies and techniques students use to master mathematics and apply STEM concepts.
\nConference host, Theresa Johnson, of TSD is thrilled for educators to take innovative tools and strategies that lead to student success back to their campuses.\u00a0 \u201cAfter the overwhelming response to our last two conferences, we discovered a real need exists for this very specific audience which was not being addressed, Johnson says. \u201cWith attendees traveling in from across the country, and even from outside of the country, we knew the interests and professional needs were being met for math and STEM educators working with deaf and hard of hearing students.\u201d<\/p>\n

MORE: A National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education National Center of Excellence, funded through the National Science Foundation and administered by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, DeafTEC is a resource for high schools and community colleges educating deaf and hard of hearing students in STEM-related programs, and for employers hiring deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
