In a partnership with the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities
\n(CTD), Advocacy, Inc., the Heart of Central Texas Independent Living
\nCenter, the Waco Mayor\u2019s Committee on People with Disabilities and
\nthe McLennan County Elections Office are hosting a voting rights
\nseminar. The fun, informative and interactive presentation gives you
\nthe opportunity to learn your rights as an active voter, by focusing
\non how the Help Americans Vote Act (HAVA) affects you. <\/p>\n
The event will be held at Executive Plaza, 6801 Sanger Ave., Room 230
\non September 9th (2008) from 4:30 \u2013 6:00 PM. Interpreters will be
\nprovided. <\/p>\n
HAVA benefits voters with disabilities. American poll workers receive
\naccessibility training to ensure your right to vote privately and
\nindependently. Furthermore, voting machines are now accessible to
\npeople with disabilities. <\/p>\n
The seminar will give you a chance try out the new voting machines
\nand gain access to voter registration materials, as well as resources
\nin your community. CTD will also provide information about voting by
\nmail, curbside voting and important voter deadlines, such as the
\nOctober 6, 2008 deadline to register. <\/p>\n

In 2002, President Bush signed the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), one
\nof the most sweeping election reforms in the last 40 years, into law.
\nHAVA has improved the administration of elections throughout the U.S.
\nwhile creating new mandates for accessible voting machines, polling
\nplace accessibility and training of poll workers. Since 2003, the
\nCoalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD), as a member of the
\nstate\u2019s HAVA Committee, has been working closely with the Texas
\nSecretary of State to develop and maintain the state\u2019s response to
\nHAVA mandates. <\/p>\n
To effectively implement and educate Texans on HAVA, the Office of
\nthe Secretary of State and CTD, continue the VOTEXAS program and are
\nworking with Texas\u2019 254 counties as well as various civic
\norganizations across the state to ensure that the VOTEXAS message is
\nheard in every region of Texas. <\/p>\n
CTD and the Waco Mayor\u2019s Committee and the McLennan with
\ndisabilities are reaching out to and educating McLennan County voters
\non how HAVA will affect them.<\/p>\n
