These beliefs<br \/>\nremain true to this day, with American Sign Language as a core value.<br \/>\nAs a nonprofit federation, the mission of the NAD is to preserve,<br \/>\nprotect, and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf<br \/>\nand hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. The<br \/>\nadvocacy scope of the NAD is broad, covering the breadth of a lifetime<br \/>\nand impacting future generations in the areas of early intervention,<br \/>\neducation, employment, health care, technology, telecommunications,<br \/>\nyouth leadership, and more. The Tony-Award winning<br \/>\nNational Theatre of the Deaf is the oldest continually producing and<br \/>\ntouring theatre company in existence in the United States. NTD speaks<br \/>\nwith two voices; one for the ear, another for the eye. By combining<br \/>\nthe spoken word with sign language, the National Theatre of the Deaf<br \/>\ncreated a dual language theatre art form. The visual imagery inherent<br \/>\nin sign language, when magnified for the stage, has the effect of also<br \/>\nmagnifying the spoken word. The English language is suddenly expanded<br \/>\nto include the visible shapes of words and ideas as they are being<br \/>\nspoken on stage by the actors.
