During the week of August 3-7, 2020, the Texas Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services is offering FUN and INTERACTIVE webinars that focus on building social, emotional, creative, and critical thinking skills for Texas youth who are deaf or hard of hearing! Participants must be Texas residents and between the ages of 8 to 17.<\/p>\n

Seats are limited, sign up today by emailing dhhs.training@hhsc.state.tx.us with the session title, child\u2019s name, child\u2019s age, and method of communication (ASL, Spoken English, Other). These sessions will meet online via the GoToMeeting platform.<\/p>\n

“Is This Okay?” with Mallory Malzkuhn <\/strong>
\nExploring Healthy Relationships<\/strong><\/p>\n

Relationships with friends, family and others can be so much fun, but also frustrating and confusing, right? Sometimes it\u2019s hard to tell if a behavior or situation is \u201chealthy\u201d or \u201cunhealthy.\u201d Suppose, your friend or partner is jealous that you are hanging out with another person. How do you respond to this? What is the \u201cright\u201d thing to do?<\/p>\n

In this webinar, we will discuss what a relationship means to us, and which behaviors are considered \u201chealthy\u201d and \u201cunhealthy.\u201d Mallory will share scenarios and invite participants to role play with each other and decide for themselves if the behaviors presented in the scenarios feel appropriate or may cause harm\/tension. We also will discuss how layered and complicated our human experiences and emotions are and how much external influence (upbringing, culture, systemic oppression, media) may contribute to unhealthy behaviors. We will also discuss healthy ways to communicate our feelings with our loved ones and how to respond when our loved ones share feedback\/feelings with us. Lastly, Mallory will offer participants space to ask any questions or share thoughts about relationships in general.<\/p>\n

A Space Odyssey with Sam Harris <\/strong>
\nStorytelling and Team Building<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the year 2100, and scientists have discovered a new, mysterious planet just outside of our solar system. Not much is known about it except it is purple with a rocky and watery surface much like Earth\u2019s. Could it mean there is life on this planet? Scientists don\u2019t have the answer yet. Astronauts have failed to visit due to experiencing strange symptoms when entering the planet\u2019s atmosphere \u2013 motion sickness and dizziness, but people who are Deaf or hard of hearing are not affected\u2026<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s up to you, young astronaut, to fly into the planet\u2019s atmosphere, land on the surface, collect data, take pictures, and return to Earth. You will not be alone. Other fellow astronauts will join you on this journey filled with fun and adventure. Are you prepared?<\/p>\n

Throughout this fun-filled interactive storytelling with lessons on self-advocacy, youth participants will learn how to solve problems they encounter, develop independence, feel empowered, become proactive, take risks, and how to work together and succeed as a team.<\/p>\n

*Note – Some common household items may be used for crafts as part of the story.<\/p>\n

About the presenter: Sam Harris is a Communication Access Specialist for the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in Texas with a background in creative writing.<\/p>\n
