Our tried and true system is based on over 6 years of cumulative experience. Amanda is passionate about setting up the audience for success in providing access to our deaf and hard of hearing stakeholders and is sure that you will leave our sessions more prepared than you have ever been.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biographical information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Texas, Amanda previously served as a Communication Access Specialist II in the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), under the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Amanda attended the University of North Texas and has years of experience as an advocate on behalf of Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers who were denied access to communication. She has given workshops on various topics such as Disability Laws, Deaf Self Advocacy Training (DSAT), Disclosing your Disability, Law Enforcement Training, Soft Skills, and Cultural Competency. Amanda also provides statewide advocacy training to empower people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing with knowledge of their disability rights. Amanda is an active member of the Deaf community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpreters as Agents of Change: Soft Skills and Ethics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been in a situation as an interpreter where you wanted to speak up but you couldn\u2019t because you didn\u2019t know how? This workshop will analyze our understanding of ethical behavior and inclusive practices. We will discuss how interpersonal communication skills such as listening, empathy, conflict resolution, and respect for others are crucial to the foundation of effective communication and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>This can be achieved by learning more about one of the deaf perspectives on how to change one\u2019s behavior as a part of the interpreter\u2019s professional responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout this interactive workshop, participants will work together on different scenarios where deaf people are being excluded and discuss how the interpreter can respond within their boundaries. Discussion and group activities will be used to adapt and apply soft skill techniques using real-world scenarios.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants will examine how the interpreter\u2019s own bias impacts the interpreting work.<br \/>\nParticipants will identify three different interpersonal communication styles as well as which style of communication needs improvement.<br \/>\nParticipants will evaluate different perspectives, and navigate the complexity that comes with a variety of perspectives.<br \/>\nParticipants will identify the soft and hard skills that interpreters already have.<br \/>\nParticipants will explain how certain behaviors are forms of unethical action.<br \/>\nAgenda<\/p>\n<p>I.
