His passion for school leadership led him to roles in Conroe ISD, and then Katy ISD, where he served as an elementary, junior high and high school principal, and eventually as an assistant superintendent for secondary school leadership and support. In these roles, Steve led school improvement efforts, increased student performance, and provided support and mentorship to staff and campus leadership. He has said that the favorite part of his career has been helping students and staff grow and achieve their potential. In retirement, Steve continues to mentor as a coach for the Katy ISD Aspiring Principals
Academy.

Elaine Robertson grew up with a sister who was profoundly deaf, and often served as interpreter for her sibling. Her sister was such an inspiration to her that Elaine always knew she would become a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. Elaine began her career with West 10 Cooperative in 1987 as a deaf education elementary teacher. She chose to focus on her family for a few years, but returned to education in 1997 as a parent infant advisor for Katy ISD. Elaine assumed the leadership role of instructional officer for deaf education, vision and assistive technology in 2002. In this role, she wrote grants to fund innovative instruction, provided engaging and inspiring staff development sessions, and served on inclusion teams and site-based management teams. Elaine also organized extra-curricular programs to bridge academic and social gaps between the deaf and hard of hearing and other students. She was also instrumental in establishing Katy ISD’s Audiological Center.

Both Steve and Elaine value the importance of “giving back to their community” by staying involved with the school district as well as supporting community events. They have volunteered with organizations including Katy Students Run, Urban Harvest, Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies and Raise Up Families. Elaine serves as a school board member for the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Steve earned Bachelor’s degrees in Liberal Arts and in Education from the University of Texas, as well as Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston. Elaine earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Disorders from the University of Texas. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University, the only university in the world where students live and learn using American Sign Language.

Steve and Elaine met while attending the University of Texas, were married in 1987 and have three children, all Katy ISD graduates. They both retired in 2020.

SOURCE:

Katy ISD to Dedicate Steve & Elaine Robertson Elementary

Katy ISD is excited to officially dedicate Steve & Elaine Robertson Elementary (SERE) after two former Katy ISD educators who have collectively contributed 64 years to public education.
