About the Class
\nCurious about learning sign language? Not sure where to begin learning about Deaf culture and communication? This class is for you! Open to anyone in middle school and older, Miss Laura will teach the basics of sign language to start you on your journey! This class will feature basic signs and phrases as well as an introduction into Deaf culture, and act as a great gateway to our ASL intern program!<\/p>\n

Open to both Deaf and hearing students!<\/p>\n

\nPresented in partnership with our longtime friends at Jasmine\u2019s Beat! Join Ms. Ashley for weekly dance classes to tell stories through movement! Using both movement and ASL, dancers will learn about hip hop and contemporary dance fundamentals, while also learning short choreographed combinations each week! This class is open to all skill levels!<\/p>\n

About the Class<\/p>\n

Ethical reflective practice presents a challenge for sign language interpreters due to the strict confidentiality obligations we must adhere to. However, this does not diminish the importance or necessity of reflective practice. Interpreters often encounter challenging situations during assignments, and it can be tempting to discuss these challenges with others, but the obligation to maintain confidentiality can prevent such discussions. Despite this, it is crucial for interpreters to engage in reflective practice and to critically evaluate their decisions and actions. Within our field, the term \u201cunethical\u201d is sometimes used to label decisions made by interpreters or their peers. Therefore, it is essential to stop and question whether this term is being correctly applied. In this workshop, Jordan and Lara will invite attendees to share their experiences and engage in supervision, a practice commonly used in the fields of psychology, nursing, and others. This will provide participants with a safe and ethical environment to discuss difficult choices they have made during assignments. Presenters will guide the conversation in an ethical manner to ensure that attendees can reflect upon their experiences without breaching confidentiality or negatively impacting the dignity of the assignments stakeholders.<\/p>\n
