\nof hearing now have a place to learn more about various health topics
\nin their native language of American Sign Language (ASL).
\nwww.DeafMD.org was launched today with the purpose of providing health
\neducation in ASL to promote the overall wellness of this vastly
\nunderserved population. \u201cOur mission is to provide clear and concise
\nhealth information in ASL to promote the overall wellness of the Deaf
\nand hard of hearing community,\u201d said Casey Davis, DeafMD.org
\nfounder. <\/p>\n
\nand hard of hearing people could turn to when they had medical
\nquestions, DeafMD.org worked in partnership with the Centers for
\nDisease Control and National Institutes for Health to provide this
\ncrucial information. The information was evaluated by a team of
\nlinguists, medical professionals, and educators, and then translated
\ninto ASL. <\/p>\n
\nillnesses, medical tests, and current news events, with each page
\nproviding a clear, easy to understand video translation of the
\nselected topic. Additionally, DeafMD.org is compiling a list of
\n\u201cDeaf- friendly doctors\u201d \u2013 medical professionals who meet
\ncriteria in satisfactorily serving Deaf and hard of hearing people. To
\nbe included on this list, medical providers must be deaf or sign ASL
\nfluently, at least one member of the provider\u2019s staff must be deaf
\nor be fluent in ASL, the provider\u2019s office must use video relay
\nservices for phone calls, and hire qualified interpreters for office
\nvisits as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Specialties
\ninclude mental health providers, physical therapists, and primary care
\nphysicians, along with many others. <\/p>\n
\nallows registered individuals to receive e-mail updates when new
\ninformation is posted onto the site. There is no charge to use
\nDeafMD.org, although the site is dependent upon donations to keep it
\nrunning. \u201cWe would not want to hinder access to this vital
\ninformation simply because someone cannot afford to pay for it. We
\nhope to benefit the entire Deaf population, regardless of
\nsocioeconomic status,\u201d said Davis. <\/p>\n
