It&#8217;s that simple&#8230; It gives the<br \/>\nDeaf individual independence to take care of their own situations<br \/>\nthemselves plus it gives the hearing world a better way to interact<br \/>\nwith those who rely on ASL for communications. Having a VRI unit<br \/>\navailable gives the hearing person a cool tool (VRI) to meet with a<br \/>\nDeaf person (who requested an interpreter) an opportunity to &#8220;talk to<br \/>\neach other, face to face&#8230;as equals!&#8221; smile.. It&#8217;s an awesome time to<br \/>\nbe a Deaf person with technology that&#8217;s available to promote the use<br \/>\nof interpreters in different formats on the Deaf person&#8217;s time<br \/>\nschedule&#8230;not scheduling their lives around the calendar of the<br \/>\ninterpreter. <\/p>\n<p>Disaster Unemployment Assistance Deadline Extended <\/p>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas &#8212; Texas workers who are unemployed because of<br \/>\nHurricane Ike have until Nov. 12 to apply for Disaster Unemployment<br \/>\nAssistance (DUA). <\/p>\n<p>The deadline for applying, which normally ends 30 days after the<br \/>\ndisaster declaration date, has been extended. This makes assistance<br \/>\navailable to the five newly designated counties &#8211; Gregg, Harrison,<br \/>\nRusk, Shelby and Smith &#8211; as well as the 29 originally designated<br \/>\ncounties. <\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for DUA under Presidential Disaster Declaration<br \/>\nFEMA-1791-DR, which covers Hurricane Ike, applicants must: <\/p>\n<p>* Have worked or been scheduled to work in the disaster area, but<br \/>\nbecause of the disaster, no longer have a job, a place to work in the<br \/>\narea or could not get to work because of the disaster damage. <\/p>\n<p>* Have been prevented from working by an injury or illness as a<br \/>\ndirect result of the disaster <\/p>\n<p>* Have become the head of the household and need employment because<br \/>\nthe head of the household died as a result of the disaster. <\/p>\n<p>Self-employed business owners who have lost all or part of their<br \/>\nlivelihood as a result of Hurricane Ike also may be eligible for<br \/>\ndisaster benefits. <\/p>\n<p>To apply, workers can go online to http:\/\/www.texasworkforce.org<br \/>\n or call a Texas Workforce Unemployment Insurance Tele-Center at: <\/p>\n<p>Austin: 512-340-4300 <\/p>\n<p>Dallas: 972-339-6200 <\/p>\n<p>El Paso: 915-832-6400 <\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth: 817-420-1600 <\/p>\n<p>Houston: 281-983-1100 <\/p>\n<p>McAllen: 956-984-4700 <\/p>\n<p>San Antonio: 210-258-6600 <\/p>\n<p>Toll-free from elsewhere: 1-800-939-6631 <\/p>\n<p>Phone lines are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
