{"id":4611,"date":"2008-10-28T00:33:20","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T05:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=4611"},"modified":"2008-10-28T02:06:15","modified_gmt":"2008-10-28T07:06:15","slug":"national-math-competition-for-middle-school-students-dhh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/10\/28\/national-math-competition-for-middle-school-students-dhh\/","title":{"rendered":"National Math Competition for Middle School Students &#8211; D\/HH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Immediate Release Contact: Greg.Livadas@rit.edu<br \/>\n (585) 475-6217 V\/TTY <\/p>\n<p>National Math Competition for Middle School Students with Hearing<br \/>\nLoss <\/p>\n<p>Middle school students from across the country who have hearing loss<br \/>\ncan participate in the third annual MATHCOUNTS\u00ae competition on April<br \/>\n3-4, 2009 at Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s National Technical<br \/>\nInstitute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. <\/p>\n<p>This competition \u2013 specifically for middle school students in<br \/>\ngrades 6 to 8 who are deaf or hard of hearing \u2013 is designed to<br \/>\npromote math as fun and engaging and features three rounds that test<br \/>\nspeed and accuracy, teamwork and additional \u201cmathletic\u201d skills. <\/p>\n<p>More than 50 students from across the U.S. participated in a team or<br \/>\nindividually in the 2008 event. The first place individual winner was<br \/>\nTed Zoerner, from Vernado Middle School in Irvine, Calif.; the top<br \/>\nteam winners were from Haggard Middle School in Plano, Texas. Cash<br \/>\nprizes up to $100 are awarded to the top three places in both the<br \/>\nindividual and team competitions. <\/p>\n<p>MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program<br \/>\nthat promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots<br \/>\ninvolvement in every U.S. state and territory. <\/p>\n<p>Coaches and students wishing to participate in the next competition<br \/>\ncan find the registration form and more information online at<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MATHCOUNTS<br \/>\n. Registration is $80 registration per team (four students) or $20<br \/>\nfor students who register individually. Registration deadline:<br \/>\nDecember 15, 2008. <\/p>\n<p>Parents and teachers are encouraged to accompany the students during<br \/>\nthe weekend, which offers fun and social activities when not focusing<br \/>\non the math competition. <\/p>\n<p>The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is attempts to increase enthusiasm for and<br \/>\nenhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the U.S.<br \/>\nEach year, teachers use problems in the annual MATHCOUNTS School<br \/>\nHandbook with more than 500,000 students. The MATHCOUNTS materials and<br \/>\ncompetition series challenge students&#8217; math skills, develop their<br \/>\nself-confidence and reward them for their achievements. <\/p>\n<p>RIT is internationally recognized as a leader in computing,<br \/>\nengineering, imaging technology, fine and applied arts and for<br \/>\nproviding unparalleled support services for students with hearing<br \/>\nloss.
