National Math Competition for Middle School Students with Hearing
\nLoss <\/p>\n
Middle school students from across the country who have hearing loss
\ncan participate in the third annual MATHCOUNTS\u00ae competition on April
\n3-4, 2009 at Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s National Technical
\nInstitute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. <\/p>\n
This competition \u2013 specifically for middle school students in
\ngrades 6 to 8 who are deaf or hard of hearing \u2013 is designed to
\npromote math as fun and engaging and features three rounds that test
\nspeed and accuracy, teamwork and additional \u201cmathletic\u201d skills. <\/p>\n
More than 50 students from across the U.S. participated in a team or
\nindividually in the 2008 event. The first place individual winner was
\nTed Zoerner, from Vernado Middle School in Irvine, Calif.; the top
\nteam winners were from Haggard Middle School in Plano, Texas. Cash
\nprizes up to $100 are awarded to the top three places in both the
\nindividual and team competitions. <\/p>\n
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program
\nthat promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots
\ninvolvement in every U.S. state and territory. <\/p>\n
Coaches and students wishing to participate in the next competition
\ncan find the registration form and more information online at

\n. Registration is $80 registration per team (four students) or $20
\nfor students who register individually. Registration deadline:
\nDecember 15, 2008. <\/p>\n
Parents and teachers are encouraged to accompany the students during
\nthe weekend, which offers fun and social activities when not focusing
\non the math competition. <\/p>\n
The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is attempts to increase enthusiasm for and
\nenhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the U.S.
\nEach year, teachers use problems in the annual MATHCOUNTS School
\nHandbook with more than 500,000 students. The MATHCOUNTS materials and
\ncompetition series challenge students’ math skills, develop their
\nself-confidence and reward them for their achievements. <\/p>\n
RIT is internationally recognized as a leader in computing,
\nengineering, imaging technology, fine and applied arts and for
\nproviding unparalleled support services for students with hearing
\nloss. This year, 1,450 students, representing all 50 states and
\nbeyond, attend NTID, where they study, live and socialize with some
\n15,000 hearing students on RIT\u2019s Rochester, N.Y. campus. <\/p>\n
