\nMcCain-Palin Rally <\/p>\n
\npushed back today against the McCain-Palin campaign for ridiculing the
\nlegal rights of people with disabilities. News reports describe
\nMcCain-Palin campaign representative Senator Kit Bond (R-Mo), joining
\nVice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin at a rally in Rush Limbaugh’s
\nhometown of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, mocking Presidential candidate
\nSenator Barak Obama for stating that he’s looking to nominate judges
\nwho empathize with “the disabled.” <\/p>\n
\npeople with “special needs” is slipping. Despite past pandering to
\npeople with disabilities, McCain-Palin are actually opposed to vital
\ndisability legislation like the Community Choice Act and they want to
\nappoint judges who will further roll back the civil rights protections
\nof the Americans with Disabilities Act,” declared NCDR’s founder and
\npresident, Jim Ward. <\/p>\n
\nconservatives’ “most oft-mentioned prospects” for nomination to the
\nSupreme Court include Ohio Judge Jeffrey Sutton. Sutton was opposed by
\nhundreds of disability organizations when he was nominated by
\nPresident Bush after successfully weakening the ADA with states’
\nrights arguments. As a sitting judge, he has recently supported the
\nexecution of criminals with developmental disabilities and has
\nundermined the Help America Vote Act(HAVA). <\/p>\n
\nMcCain-Palin campaign has reframed this civil rights struggle, one
\nfounded in concepts of equality, dignity and self-respect, as an issue
\nof “special needs.” <\/p>\n

\nemployment. Yes we need equal rights. This not “special”. These needs
\nare based on us, people with disabilities, equal members of our
\ncommunities. We are not inspirational nor are we “special”. We are
\nPROUD PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES who should push back when anyone
\ndescribes us as anything but equal members of our communities.” <\/p>\n
