Car show benefits Texas School for the Deaf <\/p>\n

There were cool rides and kids at the Texas School for the Deaf
\nSaturday for the 2nd annual Kars and Kids event. <\/p>\n
Kars & Kids, a fun family festival and car show benefiting the Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf, featured over 100 classic cars and hot rods with
\nlots of fun activities and displays for all ages, including an Austin
\nPolice Department Hummer and Motorcycle patrol, Sparky the Fire Dog
\nwas on hand and kids took part in a carnival. <\/p>\n
“This is my first experience to be involved in this and I’m judging
\nand I’m really enjoying it and seeing everybody come out,” student
\nChristine Ridgway said. <\/p>\n
One by one, the cars rolled in. Each car flaunted a unique look. <\/p>\n
Ridgway and her classmates from her auto class had the hard task of
\njudging all the cars. <\/p>\n
“There are a lot of good cars to choose from,” she said. <\/p>\n
Through the class at the Texas School for the Deaf, she’s developed a
\nfascination with cars and has learned a lot about them. <\/p>\n
She’s learned how to change different parts, how to put things back
\ntogether again in the engine, how to detect if there’s something wrong
\nwith her car,” Ridgway said. <\/p>\n
Diana Poeppelmeyer of the Texas School for the Deaf said the school
\nhas a unique program that teaches with advanced technology. <\/p>\n
“We have a whole career, technology and education center and
\nautomotive repair and auto body is a big portion of that program. It’s
\na very expensive program because it takes a lot of advanced technology
\nto run it,” she said. <\/p>\n
School officials are hoping the event will raise enough money to help
\nthem out with the cost of the program. <\/p>\n
Proceeds from Kars and Kids will help future students learn the
\nskills Ridgway has already mastered. <\/p>\n
Contestant Floyd Rutledge said he participates in the event because
\nof the benefit factor. <\/p>\n
“We do these shows because we like where the money goes to,” he said.<\/p>\n
Rutledge understands the importance of the program and passing
\nknowledge onto kids. <\/p>\n
“You can’t plug this into the computer at the mechanic’s shop and
\nhave it tell you what’s wrong with it,” he said. “You actually have to
\nknow about cars to be able to work on it.” <\/p>\n
“I have a lot of motivation, and I don’t mind getting my hands dirty
\nI think it’s pretty cool,” Ridgway said. <\/p>\n
It’s an appreciation and a common hobby students and contestants hope
\nothers will be able to take on for years to come. <\/p>\n
