Each car flaunted a unique look.

Ridgway and her classmates from her auto class had the hard task of
judging all the cars.

“There are a lot of good cars to choose from,” she said.

Through the class at the Texas School for the Deaf, she’s developed a
fascination with cars and has learned a lot about them.

She’s learned how to change different parts, how to put things back
together again in the engine, how to detect if there’s something wrong
with her car,” Ridgway said.

Diana Poeppelmeyer of the Texas School for the Deaf said the school
has a unique program that teaches with advanced technology.

“We have a whole career, technology and education center and
automotive repair and auto body is a big portion of that program. It’s
a very expensive program because it takes a lot of advanced technology
to run it,” she said.

School officials are hoping the event will raise enough money to help
them out with the cost of the program.

Proceeds from Kars and Kids will help future students learn the
skills Ridgway has already mastered.

Contestant Floyd Rutledge said he participates in the event because
of the benefit factor.

“We do these shows because we like where the money goes to,” he said.

Rutledge understands the importance of the program and passing
knowledge onto kids.

“You can’t plug this into the computer at the mechanic’s shop and
have it tell you what’s wrong with it,” he said. “You actually have to
know about cars to be able to work on it.”

“I have a lot of motivation, and I don’t mind getting my hands dirty
I think it’s pretty cool,” Ridgway said.

It’s an appreciation and a common hobby students and contestants hope
others will be able to take on for years to come.

Source:
http://www.news8austin.com/content/your_news/default.asp?ArID=223405

—

BETTER IP RELAY – EVERYWHERE! i711.com makes all your relay calls better.
Better web calls.
