We have a Deaf-friendly environment<\/p>\n<p>within our Department and our administration supports the hiring of<\/p>\n<p>Deaf individuals, but we struggle to get applications from Deaf<\/p>\n<p>individuals, especially those of diverse backgrounds. We are hoping<\/p>\n<p>you can assist us in diversifying our applicant pool. LU has a strong<\/p>\n<p>committment to the training of Deaf individuals, especially those<br \/>\nfrom<\/p>\n<p>diverse groups, as we desire to empower the Community to become<\/p>\n<p>increasingly self-sufficient. To honor this committment, it is<\/p>\n<p>IMPERATIVE that we continue to bring Deaf individuals into our<\/p>\n<p>faculty. We are hoping you can begin assisting us in helping to <\/p>\n<p>disseminate the attached job announcement to your organization<br \/>\nmembers. <\/p>\n<p>If your organization has a publication, listserv, or ezine,<\/p>\n<p>we are interested in how to advertise. Any other suggestions you have<\/p>\n<p>on how we can improve our efforts is greatly appreciated. In<br \/>\naddition,<\/p>\n<p>we are interested in strengthening our ties with your organizations,<br \/>\nso<\/p>\n<p>suggestions in that regards are also welcome (coming to campus,<\/p>\n<p>advertising your conferences, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Currently, LU has a tenure-tracked position available for an<\/p>\n<p>Assistant\/Associate\/Full Professor of Deaf Studies and Deaf<br \/>\nEducation. <\/p>\n<p>Attached (see below) you will find the announcement\/description. If<br \/>\nyou know of<\/p>\n<p>anyone that may be interested in applying, please forward them this<\/p>\n<p>information. We are especially interested in applications from<\/p>\n<p>individuals from typically underrepresented groups, especially Deaf<\/p>\n<p>indviduals, and those of Color. <\/p>\n<p>As most of you know, the Department of Deaf Studies and Deaf<br \/>\nEducation<\/p>\n<p>has a B.A. in American Sign Language, a M.S. in Deaf Studies\/Deaf<\/p>\n<p>Education, and an Ed.D. in Deaf Studies\/Deaf Education. Currently, we<\/p>\n<p>have approximately 35+ ASL majors, 30 graduate students, and 15<\/p>\n<p>doctoral students. More than 75% of our graduate and doctoral<br \/>\nstudents<\/p>\n<p>are Deaf themselves. We are a national leader in the training of Deaf<\/p>\n<p>teachers, especially those of diverse backgrounds. We educate from a<\/p>\n<p>sociolinguistic paradigm that is culturally and linguistically<\/p>\n<p>supportive of the American Deaf community. All graduate and doctoral<\/p>\n<p>classes use ASL as the language of classroom instruction and Deaf<\/p>\n<p>Education protocols integrate ASL\/English Bilingual Education. We<br \/>\nhave<\/p>\n<p>a balanced committment to teaching, research, and<\/p>\n<p>service. Additionally, Texas passed HB 868 which established the<br \/>\nCenter<\/p>\n<p>for Excellence in Deaf Studies\/Deaf Education at LU so we hope to<\/p>\n<p>expand our research endeavors and hope to train more Deaf<br \/>\nresearchers.<\/p>\n<p>Our current full-time faculty include: Dr. Gabriel &#8220;Tony&#8221; Martin,<\/p>\n<p>Department Chair &amp; Professor; Dr. Jean Andrews, Professor; Dr.<br \/>\nZanthia<\/p>\n<p>Smith, Associate Professor; Dr. Mary Anne Gentry, Assistant<br \/>\nProfessor;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Melissa Rusher, Assistant Professor; Dr. Traci Weast, Assistant<\/p>\n<p>Professor; Ms. Merrilee &#8220;Mizzy&#8221; Geitz, Instructor; and Ms. Kristen<\/p>\n<p>Jackson, Instructor. The University seeks a person with high energy,<br \/>\nenthusiasm and vision to work within the department that is in the<br \/>\nprocess of programmatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at<br \/>\nthe undergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language<br \/>\n(BA-ASL), at the graduate level with a Master\u2019s degree (MS-Deaf<br \/>\nStudies\/Deaf Education and Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and<br \/>\nDeaf Education. In addition the BA and MS areas offer coursework<br \/>\nleading to teacher certification. The successful candidate will<br \/>\npossess strong teaching, research, and writing skills. The candidate<br \/>\nmust possess strong leadership skills and interpersonal skills with<br \/>\ndemonstrated work experiences with colleagues exhibiting positive<br \/>\ncollegiality. <\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities include:<\/p>\n<p>1. \tAdvise and counsel undergraduate ASL majors and graduate majors<br \/>\nin Masters and Doctoral Deaf Education programs.<\/p>\n<p>2. \tTeach undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses within the<br \/>\nDepartment as program needs mandate.<\/p>\n<p>3. \tServe on departmental, college, and university committees as<br \/>\nnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>4. \tConduct research, scholarly activities, and grant writing to meet<br \/>\nprogram needs.<\/p>\n<p>5. \tProvide supervision for department majors during field<br \/>\nexperiences..<\/p>\n<p>6. \tMeet other day-to-day responsibilities of the faculty position as<br \/>\nnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications:<\/p>\n<p>The University seeks a person with knowledge, skills and<br \/>\nproficiencies in providing training to students in careers related to<br \/>\nASL Studies and Deaf\/Studies Education. .The successful candidate will<br \/>\nhave:<\/p>\n<p>1. Fluency in American Sign Language<\/p>\n<p>2. An earned doctoral degree in Deaf Education, American Sign<br \/>\nLanguage, Linguistics, or a closely related field. ABDs will be<br \/>\nconsidered.<\/p>\n<p>3. Knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional<br \/>\nexperiences within the Deaf community.<\/p>\n<p>4. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge regarding the EC-12<br \/>\napplication of ASL\/English bilingual education and evidence-based<br \/>\npractices. <\/p>\n<p>5. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding in ASL<br \/>\nacquisition by L1 and L2 learners. <\/p>\n<p>6. Demonstrated teaching, research and publication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Preference<\/p>\n<p>1)\tPreference will be given to a candidate who is a Native ASL user.<\/p>\n<p>2)\tPreference will be given to a candidate with three years of<br \/>\nclassroom experience with EC-12 deaf children.<\/p>\n<p>3) \tPreference will be given to a candidate with experience<br \/>\nsupervising student teachers.<\/p>\n<p>4) \tPreference will be given to a candidate with CED certification. <\/p>\n<p>5) \tPreference will be given to a candidate with certification in<br \/>\nDeaf Education and\/or ASL at the state-level (any state).<\/p>\n<p>Lamar University is a member of The Texas State University System,<br \/>\nhas an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students, and offers a wide<br \/>\nvariety of baccalaureate and masters degrees, as well as doctorates in<br \/>\nfour disciplines. Lamar faculty have a strong commitment to teaching<br \/>\nexcellence combined with research. Non-traditional students comprise<br \/>\nalmost 25% of the student enrollment at this culturally diverse,<br \/>\nmetropolitan university, while 70% of the student body is full-time<br \/>\nand under the age of 25. <\/p>\n<p>Located on the banks of the Neches River in Southeast Texas, Beaumont<br \/>\nis only 85 miles from Houston and 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico<br \/>\nbeaches. This is a<br \/>\n9-month position with the possibility of Summer teaching<br \/>\nopportunities.
