Accomplishments of 2008 and Goals for 2009 <\/p>\n
DBC is proud of all that we have accomplished this past year. With
\nthe organizational support and fiscal sponsorship of the California
\nAssociation of the Deaf, DBC has been able to establish itself on a
\nnational level as an advocate for Deaf babies\u2019 and children\u2019s
\nrights to American Sign Language from the start. <\/p>\n
Accomplishments 2008: <\/p>\n
Established a website www.dbcusa.org <\/p>\n
DBC CA led an ASL Rally in Milpitas, CA, March 2008 <\/p>\n
Booths at ASL Expos in CA and Minn. <\/p>\n
Participated in the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
\nConference, March 2008 <\/p>\n
Participated in the CAL-ED Conference in March 2008 <\/p>\n
Held its first biennial DBC Education Conference in Milwaukee WI,
\nJune 2008. Seven hundred <\/p>\n
people registered. Conference was booked to its maximum occupancy
\nwith more than 700 <\/p>\n
people. Several hundred more showed up to participate in the ASL
\nrallies. <\/p>\n
Established relationships with NAD, ASDC, CEASD, CAEBER and Gallaudet
\nand established <\/p>\n
an on-going Roundtable at Gallaudet University. Oct. 2008. Working to
\nestablish a Deaf <\/p>\n
Mentor Training Program and high quality materials and literature on
\nASL for early intervention <\/p>\n
programs, the medical society, and family resources. <\/p>\n
DBC IN led an ASL Rally at Ft. Harrison in Indianapolis, IN <\/p>\n
Held a DBC Organizational Retreat in Fremont, CA, November 2008 <\/p>\n
Established 34 DBC Chapters and 3 International Chapters <\/p>\n
Mentored hearing parents. <\/p>\n
Held several successful fundraisers to support the mission of DBC. <\/p>\n
Established networks with businesses that support DBC\u2019s mission. <\/p>\n
Produced many educational vlogs and blogs to promote awareness. <\/p>\n
Released several national press releases. <\/p>\n

Our Purpose: <\/p>\n
The main purpose of the Deaf Bilingual Coalition is to emphasize the
\nimportance of the social, emotional, linguistic, and cognitive aspects
\n(of ASL) pertaining to early visual language acquisition for all Deaf
\ninfants and young children. <\/p>\n
The secondary purpose is to make the general public aware of the
\nprevalence of misconceptions and misinformation that devalues ASL. <\/p>\n
NATIONAL OUTREACH: <\/p>\n
* Outreach nationally with organizations, businesses, schools, etc. <\/p>\n
* Monitor Legislation <\/p>\n
* Actively participate in conferences through Presentations and
\nExhibits <\/p>\n

DBC Goals: <\/p>\n
The DBC is a community of Deaf and hearing people whose goals are to
\npromote language acquisition, social justice, and quality education
\nthrough the awareness of ASL and its excellence in cultivating the
\ncritical intellect of Deaf infants and young Deaf children. The Deaf
\nBilingual Coalition will work to inform parents of Deaf children,
\nguardians, teachers of the Deaf, doctors, audiologists, government
\nofficials, businesses, and other organizations on the importance of
\nASL in early language acquisition for all Deaf infants and young Deaf
\nchildren. DBC will work to spread awareness of the research that shows
\nthat ASL does make significant contribution to the development of
\nliteracy skills in both languages, ASL and English. And lastly, DBC
\nwill work in collaboration with others to promote the respect for and
\nunderstanding of ASL. <\/p>\n
