Parents and Advocates working on behalf of individuals with
\ndisabilities often meet for hours with educators and service providers
\nto plan effective education and support services and to negotiate the
\n“when, where, who and how much” effective services will require.
\nThough the teachers and others at the table also want what is best for
\nour children, most of us are unprepared for these roles and may find
\nthat we feel overwhelmed and discouraged before we even begin! Others
\nhave felt intimidated or have had negative experiences that undermined
\ntheir confidence. <\/p>\n
This two-day training will provide participants with sound
\ncommunication approaches and negotiating tools that will contribute to
\nincreased effectiveness and successful outcomes. Participants will
\nlearn about the various communication roles team members may utilize,
\nthe seven types of conflict that occur in our communications and
\ninteractions, and how to match their negotiating and communication
\nstyles and strategies to the problem to be solved or conflict to be
\nresolved. The training will provide an active learning environment,
\nwith ample opportunities for practice and “gentle” group activities
\nand critiques that will serve to build a supportive communication
\ncommunity where we can learn and improve together. <\/p>\n
THE PRESENTER: <\/p>\n
Jamie Ruppmann, Trainer <\/p>\n
Jamie Ruppmann has worked on behalf of children, youth, and adults
\nwith disabilities and their families for over thirty years. She has
\nextensive experience in providing hands-on training and support in the
\ndevelopment and implementation of effective practices – focusing on
\nparent-professional teams and service provider organizations and
\nagencies – particularly in the areas of inclusive practices in
\nschools, effective workplace supports for individuals with significant
\ndisabilities, and in preparing parents and educators to work together
\ncollaboratively. <\/p>\n
Jamie, who lives in Vienna, Virginia, currently works for The
\nAdvocacy Institute as Associate Director where she has developed a
\nnational online training academy for special education and legal
\nadvocates working with children and youth who have disabilities. Jamie
\nis a founding member of the Autism National Committee (ANC) and the
\nCouncil of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) where she served
\nboth organizations as a board member and chair of their national
\nconferences and frequent workshop presenter. <\/p>\n
Jamie brings her personal experience as the parent of two sons who
\nhave disabilities to her work as an advocate and consultant. <\/p>\n
